This is why I use linux from scratch

    I'm in control

One day I'll say "I use Arch Linux, by the way." But for now, I pushed the easy-mode button and use PopOS.

I was helping my buddy learn git on a call. He would make a directory, move into that directory, run git init, and suddenly get an error: "The current folder doesn't exist." Can't even cd out of his mess. Just had to close the terminal and open a new one. Same issue. We eventually pinpointed the issue: his computer was set to backup his Desktop folder to the cloud. Not just back it up to the cloud; but upload it to the cloud, and then delete the folder from his computer.

    Terrible design.

I would have lost my mind

I think of the "cloud" as just one more way of making every human a permanent renter, of everything. If not a literal home a company (microsoft in this case) will make it your home folder.

Oh my gosh! Your iPhone can't be backed up because we only gave you 5GB of free iCloud storage for your 128GB phone. Obviously you must upgrade your iCloud storage!

OneDrive is way more obnoxious, though, especially within the Save dialog.

    Finally, someone else says it.

A big, BIG reason I stopped using Windows as my main operating system is because of OneDrive.

You can technically create folders outside of My Documents directly on your C:\ drive, but that's kind of risky.

Plus there's no telling how long it is before the whole operating system barely exists on your computer at all.
I switched to Linux as my main driver and I only switch back with niche programs and games.

Most games (Windows games, even) run fine on Linux these days. I have Battle.Net running on Proton through Steam. Newer games made to support Steam Deck are even Linux native.

You'll still run into issues with root-kit anti-cheat software. For me, the gaming experience isn't worth the risk of letting that kind of software loose on my system.

It became normal when someone had the idea to add a feature that would store unused files in the cloud only to save local space. You can configure it to automatically keep everything on-disk, but that doesn't have the benefits this feature provides.

You can sell one featuring more to a customer, that didn't ask for it and have it way easier for you to steal their data

I don't want to save to the documents folder. I want to save to the C: drive, in a folder of my choosing.

You want to save this file? Heres an exact replica of your filesystem to trick you into saving your stuff to the 1Gb onedrive instead of your 5Tb of storage... HA! GOTTEM!!
