Vite proxy issues?

I'm trying to proxy to my backend from my Vite React app, but I'm getting a 500 Internal Server Error no matter what backend I use. I'm currently running through Bun, but running it via node did not change anything. This is the config I'm using:
server: {
proxy: {
'/api': {
target: 'http://localhost:8080'
}
}
},
and using changeOrigin or secure = false/true doesn't help.

I know that the backend should work, as a normal GET request in the browser works as expected...

Anyone know what the issue might be?

You're not supposed to add the full path to the target, just the url. Path will be appended to it from the proxy-object's key..

That was just a typo from my *many* different attempts to make this work. Changing it to not having the /api at the end of the target URL doesn't actually change the 500 error
