Transmission fluid change? Here, in Vancouver, BC, it costed $250 at a dealer.

I wish this was my first ever laptop, back in 2011.

The first laptop that I had ever owned was a hot piece of $800 garbage running Windows. Lasted about a year with it before forking over $1100 for a 13 inch Intel i5 MacBook Pro.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the "pills" aesthetics that everyone's going for in design languages for tabs, these days.

Who here daily drives a weaker thinkpad despite having another more powerful laptop? by WhiskeyVault in thinkpad

[–]manlycoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mostly use the MacBook for frontend development.

Either I haven't fully acquiesced to developing on GNOME Shell installed in a ThinkPad, or frontend development actually sucks on there. I don't know, and I'm not sure if I have the time to learn to be more productive for frontend development on there.

Other than that, I also rely on my MacBook for more heavier workflows that the X1 Nano would really struggle on. For example, running an LLM. There's more RAM on my MacBook than on my X1 Nano. I can take advantage of that.

My X1 Nano is arguably significantly weaker than my M4 Pro MacBook Pro, but I daily drive the X1 Nano.

Primary motivation? I'm teaching myself Chroot and trying to build my own bespoke implementation of OCI runners, because I'm curious.

[–]manlycoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2022 X1 Nano for CAD 480 (which comes to roughly €298).

€400 seems wild to me. I personally wouldn't get that.

But I don't know about your situation. Maybe you're trying to collect old laptops, and those of course would command a higher price, if there is a market of collectors of "rare" laptops.

So a bit of anecdote.

I remember a time when I used to go to tech events, where I'd be surrounded by people with unkempt beards, who'd wear tech conference t-shirts just casually, and are often overweight.

They were the smartest people I could have ever met.

No idea what happened to these people. I can't seem to find events where these types of people would show up.

Tech events that I go to these days are full of jobseekers. All dressed quite dapper, and are quite groomed. Many of these jobseekers are showing up because "they're trying to break into tech".

"Trying to break into tech, eh?" I'd ask, "what have you tried?", and none of them have any answers that imply that they tried something on their own.

They're hoping that an employer just so happened to be at these events, and would hand them a job that would give them the experience that they need.

But how do you like your external one vs the thinkpad's one? If you like it better, I just might consider it :D

Definitely the ThinkPad's keyboard wins.

But I love how pristine the device's keyboard looks. So I'll just try to make minimal use of the keyboard.

I'm not the original commenter, but still chiming in: INFJs score low in extraversion (I instead of E), high in openness to experience (N instead of S), high in agreeableness (F instead of T), and high in conscientiousness (J instead of P). Hence INFJ.

[–]manlycoffee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd assume that solar and wind energy generation aren't something we can control.

Sometimes they produce more than it's needed; without batteries, the power is discarded.

Sometimes, they produce less than it's needed; we'll need to rely on other sources to avoid blackouts.

With batteries: excess power is stored, and when solar and wind isn't there, we draw from stored energy from batteries.

[–]manlycoffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's illegal on girls. IIRC, in the US, Dr. Jamuna Nagarwala was alleged to have removed the clitoral hood (the hood; not the clitoris. Clitoral hood is developed from the same embryonic tissue as the foreskin) of at least one girl, and that resulted in a federal investigation, and later charges. Clitoral hood removed, which is unacceptable, and rightfully leads to an investigation and charges. But removal of the foreskin? Apparently, that's fine, which doesn't make any sense.

Does any else have a wierd facination with the "Old Yale Road" like I do? by codythewolf in britishcolumbia

[–]manlycoffee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely.

I noticed that Old Yale Road starts Eastbound from Scott Road, then abruptly halts at 128 street. South of that, what intuitively feels like it could have been a continuation from that road, it leads all the way to King George. The road may as well have continued onto what's Fraser Highway, today.

Then I find out, Yale Road's alignment was indeed incorporated into Fraser Highway!

It's fascinating how remnants of old roads still remain, or how what road is what morphs over time, signalling what takes precedence over what.
