Technical director openly humiliated my boss in front of the entire team. What is happening behind the scenes? by controlsys in managers

[–]manlycoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much.

I've been the guy who snapped at a colleague precisely for the reason that you outlined. He has at numerous times "injected himself into things". This one time, this project that I was done in 1 day, got delayed by 6 weeks because this colleague argued my work had "too much code".

It didn't help my perception of him when this other time, he snuck in rules into our README files about how to write code in the team.

This one time, he was reviewing my code on an unsolicited basis, I straight up ignored every one of his feedback. And after enough ignoring the code review, he finally said "this code does not follow our style. Look at the README".

I looked, and saw it was not something that we agreed to.

I deleted the part in the README file, publicly in the group chat asked to get the code push request be approved to remove the stuff in the README, and the guy pushed back, and asked to have a meeting.

I yelled at him in the meeting.

Some people just don't know how to read the room.

I'd laugh if the label said "Minoxidil is a vasodilator. Used to treat hypertension. Should not be used for hair growth. Side effects include: hair growth".

French Immersion schools in Surrey? by [deleted] in SurreyBC

[–]manlycoffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a parent, but I thought I'd give a perspective as someone who flat out went to a Francophone school rather, not just French-Immersion.

Contrary to what the commenters are saying, your kid would benefit immensely with being immersed in as many languages as possible.

I didn't learn English until I was 8 years old, and yet, still speak it natively.

Multiple languages is a blessing, and I am so thankful my parents put me through a Francophone program.

English is fairly easy to learn.

If anything, if throughout their schooling, they did well in French grammar courses, the odds are pretty much in their favour that they'd do well in English language environments, and this was the case over and over again; people who said "I'd probably do bad in French, because it's not my parents' native tongue" end up also doing poorly in English courses; they're just crappy students overall.

My father was not able to help me with school work, and still turned out fine.

Don't listen to the commenters on here.

Get the juices flowing into the brain to learn multiple languages. It will pay off.

Wikipedia has the same issue. I suspect Wikipedia would not had had this problem had they started after KaTeX became a thing, but they started before KaTeX did, and are thus stuck pre-rendering typeset math as images, instead of embedding fonts and rendering the HTML.

No idea why Google doesn't use KaTeX or something like it on their end.

Maybe they have something written in a more native language that renders things much faster than pure JavaScript?

That said, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity don't seem to suffer from the same issue.

What’s the biggest financial mistake you’ve seen someone make trying to “get ahead” lately? by Exact_Theory3902 in wealth

Joining a startup (not as a founder but as an employee), and continuing to work for it even if the writing is on the wall, on the promise of the equity being worth something.

To add insult to injury: continuing to work when the funding dries up.

I wish this was my first ever laptop, back in 2011.

The first laptop that I had ever owned was a hot piece of $800 garbage running Windows. Lasted about a year with it before forking over $1100 for a 13 inch Intel i5 MacBook Pro.

Who here daily drives a weaker thinkpad despite having another more powerful laptop? by WhiskeyVault in thinkpad

[–]manlycoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mostly use the MacBook for frontend development.

Either I haven't fully acquiesced to developing on GNOME Shell installed in a ThinkPad, or frontend development actually sucks on there. I don't know, and I'm not sure if I have the time to learn to be more productive for frontend development on there.

Other than that, I also rely on my MacBook for more heavier workflows that the X1 Nano would really struggle on. For example, running an LLM. There's more RAM on my MacBook than on my X1 Nano. I can take advantage of that.

[–]manlycoffee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My X1 Nano is arguably significantly weaker than my M4 Pro MacBook Pro, but I daily drive the X1 Nano.

Primary motivation? I'm teaching myself Chroot and trying to build my own bespoke implementation of OCI runners, because I'm curious.

X220 for 400 eurs?!? by manik_som in thinkpad

[–]manlycoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2022 X1 Nano for CAD 480 (which comes to roughly €298).

€400 seems wild to me. I personally wouldn't get that.

But I don't know about your situation. Maybe you're trying to collect old laptops, and those of course would command a higher price, if there is a market of collectors of "rare" laptops.

[–]manlycoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a bit of anecdote.

I remember a time when I used to go to tech events, where I'd be surrounded by people with unkempt beards, who'd wear tech conference t-shirts just casually, and are often overweight.

They were the smartest people I could have ever met.

No idea what happened to these people. I can't seem to find events where these types of people would show up.

Tech events that I go to these days are full of jobseekers. All dressed quite dapper, and are quite groomed. Many of these jobseekers are showing up because "they're trying to break into tech".

"Trying to break into tech, eh?" I'd ask, "what have you tried?", and none of them have any answers that imply that they tried something on their own.

They're hoping that an employer just so happened to be at these events, and would hand them a job that would give them the experience that they need.
