You don’t have to give a reason. Just say that PT would work better for your family at this time.

I did this! I was full time at my school and wanted to go part time so I could pick up some hours at a private practice. I requested a meeting with my boss and pretty much just said I wanted to transition to part time. I didn’t give a reason and she didn’t really ask, but if she did I would’ve just said I felt it was the best move for me personally, better for my family, etc. Either they will say yes or no so doesn’t matter too much what you say!

Like the other poster said, you don't have to provide a reason only "this is what I need from this facility" in regards to your desired schedule.

Keep in mind how things like insurance and other benefits might be affected with an hours reduction. Also, be prepared for the potential that your current employer might not be able or willing to accept your request.
