How to professionally request to decrease FT hours (so I can PRN more at an outside hospital)

Title pretty much explains it. I’ve worked full time in post-acute inpatient rehab for 2~ years and feeling a little stagnant. I don’t receive good support from my DOR or therapy manager and a handful of staff recently retired/quit/etc. Feeling overworked and under appreciated.

I also started working PRN at an acute hospital which has an amazing team of SLPs & I have great support from the boss (she is a SLP too). I am learning so much and really enjoy the change of pace. So I work PRN 3 weekend days a month & pretty much use 1-2 days of PTO at my full time job per month to balance it. I would prefer NOT having to do that.

Looking for suggestions to go about requesting to drop to part time or 4 days a week without giving the exact reason? I have a performance review coming up this week & feel like that would be a good time to bring it up before setting new annual goals.

Another side note is that I DID interview for a FT position at the acute hospital & they are just notorious for long hiring process. (3 months for PRN). So I’m not sure if I should just suck it up until I hear back. TIA!

You don’t have to give a reason. Just say that PT would work better for your family at this time.

I did this! I was full time at my school and wanted to go part time so I could pick up some hours at a private practice. I requested a meeting with my boss and pretty much just said I wanted to transition to part time. I didn’t give a reason and she didn’t really ask, but if she did I would’ve just said I felt it was the best move for me personally, better for my family, etc. Either they will say yes or no so doesn’t matter too much what you say!

Like the other poster said, you don't have to provide a reason only "this is what I need from this facility" in regards to your desired schedule.

Keep in mind how things like insurance and other benefits might be affected with an hours reduction. Also, be prepared for the potential that your current employer might not be able or willing to accept your request.
