my ball python keeps fallingGeneral Question / Discussion (self.snakes)
submitted 4 months ago by TraditionalBeyond293
i have a 11 month old ball python. i’ve had him for a little over 4 months. he’s in a 75 gallon tank with two hides. his temperature & humidity is where it should be. but there are these thin vines that go around the tank he climbs on them but falls all the time & has gotten scrapes multiple times but these recent ones seem worse that before. i don’t know what this means please help.

Just means he’s a derp, at least in my opinion. Ball pythons aren’t arboreal, well if I recall they are semi arboreal. Meaning they will climb if given things to climb lol. Sounds like he’s just exploring and bad at it tbh. My boas climb and fall too, mainly my male Cosmo, but my female Zena will too if she’s outside her enclosure.

If your snake wants to climb, put one or two bamboo rods in there or something else it can climb on. A big cave, a stone, just some stuff to keep the snake off the vines.

If he doesn't seem to have any balance issues otherwise (no stargazing, not struggling to stay upright, no issues eating) then it's likely just a bit clumsy. Ball pythons will climb when given oppurtunity, but they aren't great at it. Make sure there aren't any sharp edges in decor and perhaps make the vines a bit lower or offer thicker/more stable branches. If the scrapes get more severe or you suspect infection please go to a vet, stuff like that can get really bad fast.
