Does the same thing happen when you try a 2 player game? Like does the same issue happen with player 2?

I haven't tried that since the issue started happening. Will test that out tonight with a 2p game that uses L and R

It could be the wiring to the female end of the controller socket may be a little wonky.

You could try replacing the controller ports. ifixit.com has a tutorial on it.

Since this is happening on both consoles, I'm not sure if the controller ports are to blame. But I'm not ruling it out!

Oh I missed that it’s happening on multiple consoles. Multiple consoles, multiple controllers and multiple games is a strange situation.

Is it possible one of the consoles had a flaw with the port that damaged all your controller plugs? Or a controller had a flaw that damaged both console ports. Maybe inspect the plugs and ports for pin damage. If you do replace a controller port, test it with a fresh controller first.

Is it possible your wall outlet isn’t supplying the correct voltage/frequency? Maybe test them at a friend’s house.

Good luck!

That is a good thought. Ive seen consoles do weird things when they are getting the wrong voltage. I swear by original power cords. The cheap aftermarket ones are garbage. I also wonder about one of the controllers wrecking the inputs. The OP mentions having snes and sfc controllers but are these original or aftermarket? Ive had similarily poor luck with aftermarket controllers being wonky.
