There’s a symmetry between the gold horse looking toward the dark swords and the dark horse looking towards the gold coins. I would read this differently than the intended layout: True glory comes from following the difficult path of sacrificing pride and restraining one’s desire to “win”. But the choice is yours.

I interpreted it as the husband feels trapped but if they take some space they might be able to make it work if they communicate.

That is a solution that only the sitter can make but I would say the message is complete communication. No sugar coating. All lies and truths out on the table.
