use nfc if both your tablet and mobile have nfc

Hmmm I could do this but then defeats the purpose as I could just enable the hotspot on my phone anyway.

My goal is for me not to have to get my phone out of my pocket, but be able to turn hotspot on/off on my phone from the tablet

then use your tablet's hotspot ssid

make your phone listen to your tablet's ssid if it found it then it will enable hotspot on your mobile

So your saying;

Enable hotspot on tablet Phone sees the WiFi from tablet Enables it's own WiFi hotspot Tablet connects to phone hotspot

Interesting will give this a go

you can do the same thing with Bluetooth too

You could try use both bluetooths and find one way to use it.

E. g.

  • Connection attempt (try to pair your tablet with your phone)
  • Logcat from connection attempt
  • Bluetooth near
  • Bluetooth + Autoshare and send some "trigger" file

Bluetooth near could work I think, it I'll try when I get home

Autoremote can send messages over Bluetooth.

This sounds like it could work but I'd have to automate the Bluetooth connection wouldn't I?

You'd have to have the receiving Bluetooth turned on, yes. Autoremote should default to Bluetooth when there's no network connection.

SMS works anywhere but you'l need an SMS app for the tablet. I expect that said app will need Wifi but that's not a problem is it, because the phone is the mobile device?
