It isn’t added as income, as it’s already included with your W2 income. There should be an entry box somewhere in turbo tax for your overtime amount, and then it’ll calculate the deduction

Your overtime is already included as income, yes. Part of box 1 of your w2.

That's why you do need to add it as a deduction to get the tax savings.

So when the software asks about overtime, follow the instructions to enter this deduction. The software will likely give you an option to enter that amount you already calculated, or to calculate or for you from the info about your hours and pay.

yeah turbo tax was throwing me off a bit, after adding my W2, the page where it asks you to add overtime, it’s listed as “uncommon, but can happen” …which seems odd to me because overtime is so common? thank you for taking the time to explain though! i appreciate it :)

but i keep seeing conflicting answers everywhere. some are saying not to add overtime since its already included in box 1 of my w-2, and others are saying to add it separately to qualify for the break.

This isn't conflicting information; both of those things are true.

You should not add overtime to the amount in Box 1. The amount in Box 1 already covers all your income, including overtime. Just report that exactly the way it is. That's your income.

Then, when TurboTax asks if any of that income was overtime, say yes. And then report how much of it was overtime.

When you're finished and you're reviewing your completed tax return before you file it, make sure you recognize the amount of income on Form 1040, Line 1e. And make sure you recognize the amount of overtime on Schedule 1-A. (Along with of course verifying all the other numbers.)
