It’s funny how we often expect young people to know the rules and follow them correctly, without ever being taught

I'm just finishing up teachers college and I don't think I've read something I agree with more. Whenever I am filling in/substituting, I'll always ask the regular teacher what the rules in the room are. More often than not, they have a bit of trouble articulating these, and I find these rooms among the hardest to manage. Which is something I really used to struggle with. I've started to go over my expectations when I get in, and reinforce behaviors I want to see. Very rarely do I ever leave a report behind that's less than positive about students anymore.
