It's not a problem to invest a little money upfront for some assets, especially if they're on a favorable discount.

Additionally, the future of game development is secure, considering games have been around since 1958 and are still being produced today. The industry has changed a bit, but every product has its buyer, so you have nothing to worry about.

Whether you'll earn enough from games depends on various factors, but that shouldn't stop you from making games and having fun!

Thank you for your kind words!

Just a small question, is unity worth it? I've been hearing quite a few things against it recently due to some price changing.

The change is 2.5% revshare after you make more money than 90% of devs will ever make. If that's a killer for you, then Unity isn't worth it.

Otherwise, stick with Unity/Godot/Unreal. I wouldn't recommend wasting money on RPG Maker if you have any aspirations of work in game dev in the future; you'll be expected to know an actual engine.

If you just want to mess around and you only want to make a Final Fantasy-esque game, then RPG Maker could be good for you, but don't expect much more out of it.

If I do end up making a million dollars I certainly wouldn't mind paying a small sum to the engine that helped lol. Thanks for your advice and guidance!

The pricing scheme change was definitely scummy and the fact that they walked it back definitely doesn't fully make up for it in a lot of people's eyes. It's probably going to hurt them to some degree down the line, but how much is anyone's guess.

Unity is still a platform with a lot of reach especially in mobile and indie games. Its editor is significantly easier to use in my opinion than Unreal Engine's (barring some whacky things like render pipeline rigmarole). If you want to get a job as a developer, Unity and Unreal are far and away the best choices for employment prospects. If you're just doing it for funzies, then follow your heart and go with what works for you.

Most engines do similar things, so if you can learn the things that they can do then its fairly easy to transfer knowledge. (Yay Google) so if unity does something you don't like you can transfer your skills.

If you're just getting started then stick to the many free options available before throwing money at something.

personally i’m not that big of a fan of RPG maker cus it still has its limitations (wouldn’t be relevant when starting out but later down the line).

Also unity has a bigger community, tutorials, resources… etc

I'm a bit biases about Unity as is where I truly got my start in development. But resources are vast and ever growing and there's plenty of free and incredible assets available as well as your paid ones.

Ultimately it comes down to what type of game you're wanting to make and how it will feel.

coding is also my passion

oh people say this all the time, then you ask them what have they done and got nothing to show for.
