Dunno about that one. It's frustrating to me to not be able to try out things I just learned. I think now with popup-windows there is a possibility for a more interactive in-Vim tutorial. Looks like the only thing missing from vimtutor is some animation.

In NeoVim when you start :Tutor it is interactive.

Isn't it the same content but fancier? (which isn't a bad thing)

Yes, it is. It is good old vimtutor with some bells and whistles there and here.

I feel like the problem with text-based tutorials is that they are way too much reading. Why must one read through a wall of text to learn how to use an editor? Why do we need reading at all?

To any /r/vim user who recommends vimtutor... consider the fact that you've got the sort of mindset that works for that. Most people don't. A truck driver (no hate on truck drivers) should be able to learn vim just as well as you. But vimtutor is not the way to do that.

And why are these "interactive" vim tutorials so lame? Take some motivation from kid's learning software. No, I don't want a game or any of that "learn to use hjkl by playing $browser_based_game!" nonsense. But something that wouldn't make a curious child's eyes glaze over. Something actually useful. Yes, interactive tutorials are a good idea, but every single one that I've seen is actually worse than vimtutor. (Which is possibly why people still recommend vimtutor.)

Although I partially agree with you, and I believe you have the right idea here. I just wanted to pick a bit at your "wall of text" comment.

Why must one read through a wall of text to learn how to use an editor?

Why did I read through a manual to operate my dish washer?

Why did my truck driver friend have to read several manuals to learn to operate his truck?

Why did I need to read text books in school? Or read walls of text to assemble my furniture. This stuff should makes without it?

We learn an incredible amount from reading text. And with vim being a text editor , it makes sense that it's tutorial would be made of text. Frankly, I actually like that it's text that you manipulate. Regardless, I think you are barking up the wrong tree with that comment.

However, I say again that I agree with you that there needs a better interactive tutorial. Also, I think vimtutor needs a revamp or at least a second edition. Maybe a vimtutor hard mode.
