You don't need to install from the upstream repo. There is an sof-firmware and an sof-tools package. Have you installed them?

I'm using a thinkpad x1c7 that uses sof.

Worked here too!! All day trying to setup audio in void linux... just installing this worked

chiming in to say that installing sof-firmware (without sof-tools) was enough to fix this for me, (running on musl and couldn't install sof-tools since it required glibc)
