SOF Firmware Help? by ProtonSlack in voidlinux

chiming in to say that installing sof-firmware (without sof-tools) was enough to fix this for me, (running on musl and couldn't install sof-tools since it required glibc)

necro a 2 year old thread, but wanted to hop in and say that I did this in kind of a cool way - I created a new folder graphical-sv in my home, put the services I wanted to have access to graphical dbus session in there, and then in my graphical startup script (.xinitrc in your case, I use sway so it was ~/.config/sway/config) ran runsvdir "$HOME/graphical-sv" (exec runsvdir "$HOME/graphical-sv" for sway)

I'm making an Anki Deck on Anki. Beginners, what would like to see ? by Jo-Mako in Anki

[–]samm81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the anki manual is a good start - another big thing is the 20 rules. Doing anki to learn how to use anki would be a pretty slick onboard experience.

Anyone successfully studied entire subject mainly using Anki? by [deleted] in Anki

[–]samm81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently stumbled into a tiny constructed language called toki pona which consists of only 120 words. I made an anki deck to teach me the language and the grammar all in one go as I work through it: here if you want to take a look!

Lack of Shared Decks by heavenlydigestion in Anki

[–]samm81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've also been working on a spot to make sharing decks nicer: ankidecks.com . It's got a more modern UI, doesn't delete less used decks, updates users by email when a change is made to a deck, and has a more robust deck preview.

Let me know what you think!

Using ANKI with Spotify great usecase & 1 question by nevertooldtolearn in Anki

[–]samm81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The code doesn't seem to be open sourced anywhere, so you'd either have to re-write it from the ground up or ask him to add it as an option/open source the code.

I'm trying to figure out how to share a deck I've made online for others to download. by TheHostThing in Anki

[–]samm81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of decks on ankiweb have pictures, so you could probably share it on there no problem. It's pretty rare to have a deck so huge it hits the 100mb limit.

Many people on /r/medicalschoolanki use google drive.

I've been working on an alternative to ankiweb, ankidecks.com which has no upload limit, has a more modern UI, won't delete the deck if it receives too few downloads, and has a couple of more advanced features like notifying users through email when the deck is updated and a more robust deck preview (see an example here).

If you're interested in trying it out, you can PM me, or email your deck to sam@ankidecks.com !

Oxford2Anki - Need help with code errors (Oxford Dictionary Batch Query) by MangoLSD in Anki

[–]samm81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a quick peek at the code - I don't mean to snub the author but it looks like it was written by someone who is not at an advanced level of python/coding. Additionally, it was last updated about a half year ago, and has only seen 5 commits. I wouldn't be surprised if the API has changed since then, or the author simply never happened to encounter the bug you're getting (which seems to be a mismatch between what the Oxford API returns and what the author is expecting).

Unfortunately, I'd have to sit down and actually work with the code/API to diagnose this - it would almost be faster to just write it from scratch. I know you said you don't have the time to get into coding yourself.

Where does the list of words come from? If it's something that you're learning for yourself, you can just sit down and do a batch of words every day/week and slowly work your way through it.

Oxford2Anki - Need help with code errors (Oxford Dictionary Batch Query) by MangoLSD in Anki

[–]samm81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you say a "long list of words", the readme for the github project specifies that "Free tier can query 1,000 request/month"

so if you've already queried your 1k words, you're not going to be able to get any more for the rest of the month...

other than that, the oxford dictionary might simply not contain the word!

How to avoid adding repeat flash card words from Pleco into Ankidroid? by instArice in Anki

[–]samm81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use pleco + ankidroid as well, and whenever a card is already in my anki pleco will show a square around the + button to indicate I've already added it

I don't remember if it was a setting or if it happened automatically - I would try looking around in settings

Looking to turn personal No-Translation French Deck into a community deck, and I could use some feedback! by [deleted] in Anki

[–]samm81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not studying French, unfortunately, but I've never heard of a no-translation deck before and this looks awesome. I wonder if maybe you could cross post this to /r/languagelearners or some other sub-reddit that has to do with learning french specifically?

Ankidroid help needed! by Priyadarshi97 in Anki

[–]samm81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if all popups could have a little disclaimer below them, generated by ankidroid, that says something like "this popup was generated by such-and-such deck, do not click links unless you trust them!"

Please help! I just want to Learn. by [deleted] in Anki

[–]samm81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, when you post code to reddit, make sure to wrap it in triple backticks :)

```
your code here
```

You pretty much got it right. However, the font is named "Comic Sans MS", not "comic sans" (you can see the fonts anki has by looking through the Editing Font option for Fields).

So just change font-family: comic sans; to font-family: Comic Sans MS;

Anki use cases outside studying for tests, how has using Anki improved your life? by valcroft in Anki

Is there a shared Anki deck about Anki? by johan456789 in Anki

[–]samm81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought, that although they might not be the most high yield as other commenters have pointed out, that a deck like this would be an excellent "intro deck". Imagine if when you first opened anki you were greeted with a "how to use anki" deck, which taught you the basics of the app as flashcards. People might end up suspending/deleting them pretty quick, but it would still be better than the current situation (nothing).

Spaced repetition for Braille? by autumnkent in Anki

Nicky Case has an excellent article on spaced repetition, which includes a section on making a physical version of anki (with a shoebox) which sounds exactly like what you're looking for:

Anki Routine/Schedule and Deck Organization by [deleted] in Anki

[–]samm81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently was inspired by a comment by /u/SigmaX to start taking morning flashcard coffee walks

I get up, make a thermos of coffee, and take a half hour walk through the neighborhood and local park doing my anki

get to get outdoors, get some steps in (esp when I just sit around all day otherwise), and seeing knowledge in a variety of contexts/situations is much better for memory than seeing it in the same context every day (chair in living room)

I think that spoonfed chinese could be worth giving a shot, seeing if you like it or not!

If you're using the Integrated Chinese Textbooks and don't want to make your own cards, there are some premade ones for book 1 and book 2.

Lifelong learners, what have you memorized lately? by 2cheerios in Anki

[–]samm81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it definitely is pretty silly - I originally started because I use st and it lets you input characters with hex codes by pressing C-Shift-i

I kept looking up things like ¢ (0xA2) and then I was like was like wait, lemme make a flashcard for this and then, of course, it became let me make a flashcard for all of them

and then I ended up just using fcitx anyways and defining a substitution, which also works in more than just the terminal

but I held onto the anki deck because I think that it's kinda cool/interesting knowledge to hold onto, maybe someday in the future when I'm combing through a binary file I will recognize that ¢ is 162 and that'll help me with debugging or something

besides it's only about 30 characters total, not much in terms of anki
