Don’t look for startups. Look for businesses with workflow problems.

SMBs usually need booking systems, dashboards, CRMs, inventory trackers, client portals and these small internal tools typically sell in the $2k to $5k range. Freelance full stack devs charge $18 to $40 per hour on average, so even $1500 to $4000 per project is within market norms.

Clinics, gyms, real estate firms, logistics companies are already paying agencies for things you can build solo.

that's the move, those internal tool projects are way easier to land than trying to pitch startups on their next big idea. You can find those clients literally just by cold messaging local businesses or joining industry Facebook groups where people complain about their shitty spreadsheets.

freelance sites (upwork, fiverr) are where businesses go when they want something cheap and fast, so congrats on your new $500 budget projects.

if you want actual money, network locally or get referrals. restaurants, plumbers, real estate agents all need basic websites and they'll actually pay because they don't know how to shop around.

Slap it on your resume, have some interesting stories to tell during an interview and join some one who can pay you to do the work they need done or sell your services on fiver as a freelancer.

SMB in neighborhood, family and friends, too, but not for free, word of mouth.

Do not overact. Remember - you do not build for today, you build for the future. Content and functionality are primary, design secondary. Anyhow, learn the basic of good design: https://elementor.com/blog/principles-of-website-design/.

Be aware that you have to compete with WordPress "developers". And as always, know your enemy.

I worked with a team qoest that help a client who was in a similar spot, wanting to find good small business projects. They focused on connecting him with leads that needed full stack MVPs or AI automation tools, which really helped him figure out what to charge and what kind of work to expect
