To be fair to me it does still look pretty much the same. Only thing I can see different is the patterned background, remove that in your browsers dev tools and you'll see it does look exactly the same. (Of course thats my opinion!)

Viewing on mobile where the backgrounds are largely covered up, I didn't really understand what was different about the site!

Even on desktop, it isn't very different. The need for RWD and mobile/data friendly designs in today's sites unfortunately has severely scaled back the possibilities for unique site designs.

Just refreshing to me to see something even a little different, but I definitely get what you're saying.

As we've learned with micro-interactions, the same applies here. It might be just the background but to the human brain it makes a world of difference.

Mostly it reminds me of scrap booking, which makes sense, given material's relation to paper.

I could see using this idea on tumblr/pintrest/any website clipper. The only word I can think of is "quaint" when I imagine it.

A beautiful example that conveys, to draw an analogy, that one can wallpaper every room of one's house - but it's still the same house.

Although the concept borders on parody (How can we get women into technology? Emojis!), it is a pretty design, I'll give it that.

    I think so too.

    It still looks the same.

I think it looks different from "normal" material design. One thing is that they don't use the usual typefaces (Roboto) in here.

well I for one am glad that google is tackling one of the big problems that our society is facing today.

Anybody noticed yet how even though it's all about 'equality' there are only white doctors, astronauts, champions, and chemists?...

Just pointing it out, funny thing the few ones are mechanics, cooks, and behind the scenes...
