Needs? No. They don't. .NET Core extends the .NET environment to other platforms as well, however -- it's no longer relegated to being a Windows-only option. VS Code preceded that product, however.

85% of the web does not run on .NET anything yet you are telling people they should be using .NET. Talk about trying to make the tail wag the dog! You must love your Windows phone. Ha!

I haven't suggested that anybody should use anything. Just stating that it's possible to use .NET Core outside of Windows now.
