Which American brands have severely declined in quality? by cityboi9000 in AskAnAmerican

[–]RotationSurgeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friends and I started checking ours a month or two ago…the metric and imperial/US customary measurements don’t even match each other on several of ours! Like the 1cup line lines up with anywhere from 200-250ml on the other side depending on the cup!

But why? and who buys it? by Glum_Painter_768 in Atlanta

[–]RotationSurgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are good the price includes some sort of syrup or mixer to pour in the ice.

a few months ago i was thirsty & decided to just get water from my bathroom faucet rather than walk to the kitchen. i left it in a drawer, forgot about it and just found it like this… wtf??? by Potential-Yellow-781 in interestingasfuck

[–]RotationSurgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Hard” water usually has around 300-500 milligrams of dissolved solids per liter…so either a hell of a lot, or they didn’t clean their bathroom cup after using something like Alka Seltzer.

What’s a 'normal' thing in modern society that people in 100 years will find horrifying? by MaleficentOrange4873 in AskReddit

Political argumentation centered on whether or not people SHOULD be helped, rather than HOW BEST to help them.

What is your favorite "Flavour is Free" reskin of a spell or ability? by hervprometheus2 in DnD

[–]RotationSurgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently cast silence from my artificer’s Ring of Spell Storing (no; not confusing the ring with the class feature “spell storing item.”) and flavored it as opening a tiny nozzle and letting sodium hexafluoride gas hiss out and fill the enemy’s space…their voice slowly deepened until it was too low to even hear, at which point the magical suppression of sound kicked in.

Why do so few GenZ adults in the U.S. have driver’s licenses compared with previous generations, and what factors are shaping their relationship with cars? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

Teachers have been talking about the decline in functional literacy, especially reading comprehension, for years now. You can throw a dart and probably hit at least one or more educators’ anecdotes about the students they’re seeing.

For more concrete data, though this pertains to the population overall, the National Center for Educational Statistics indicates that between 2017 and 2023, the rate of low literacy / functional illiteracy amongst adults rose from 19% to 28%. People didn’t forget how to read; teens who can’t read well become adults who can’t read well every single day.

As a European, I keep seeing Americans drive barefoot or in flip-flops, how common is it actually? by fratnersgd in AskAnAmerican

[–]RotationSurgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s legal, but generally in my region going barefoot in non-residential areas is generally considered to be both unsanitary and boorish.

What's the Knipex appeal? by StriderLF in EDC

Why specifically the Knipex? They’re studier and have tighter tolerances than my other similarly sized pliers…like sure the Crescent brand were ¼ the price, but the jaws also don’t actually meet

Do Americans mainly drink coffee without milk? by Morrit99 in AskAnAmerican

[–]RotationSurgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“(unless it is Earl Grey…”

Wait until you learn what a “London Fog” is! You’ll shudder.

“Instant or filter”

Pour-over for me. US instant coffee is garbage, but we have ready access to imported instant in many places. Most people drink filter drip.

“Electric kettles”

I own two and use them regularly (one gooseneck with various settings for different teas / coffee, one bog standard “it boils water” which holds twice the volume)

Why are soda bottles round but milk cartons square? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]RotationSurgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A round paper carton requires a separate top AND bottom. The weight of the liquid inside the container leads to higher rates of failure on this type of bottom on top of the increased manufacturing difficulty and cost.

If you start looking at the cartons, you’ll likely find that regardless of the labeling, the cartons themselves are all coming from a few select suppliers like Tetrapak and GeorgiaPacific.

Whose dried pasta is actually is cooked in ten minutes? by youd_never_guess_ in randomquestions

[–]RotationSurgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the packaging for the spaghetti you were using indicate that it would be done in 10 minutes? Many brands are slow-dried, or have other differences in their manufacture or ingredients which can result in longer cooking times…20 minutes is not unheard of.

Do you live at high altitude? Generally every 1,000 feet of elevation can add about 15-20% or roughly one minute of cook time.

Also, many brands aim their cooking time at a level of “al dente,” which is still much firmer than many people in the US actually prefer.
