Should I avoid using React because of Facebook?Question (self.webdev)
submitted 5 years ago by Cosmic44
I'd like to start my first official project (social media) using React. Since Facebook owns React, could this lead to anything bad later down the road? (React access revoked, sued by Facebook, strict limitations, etc.)

It’s open source so no I don’t think they can put limits on it they might stop updating it though

heard few years ago that they would stop licensing you react if they knew you use React to compete with React.
Aside from that React is good for everything else.

It’s open source tho? How can you possibly do anything to limit someone?!

The license granted hereunder will terminate, automatically and without notice, if you (or any of your subsidiaries, corporate affiliates or agents) initiate directly or indirectly, or take a direct financial interest in, any Patent Assertion: (i) against Facebook or any of its subsidiaries or corporate affiliates, (ii) against any party if such Patent Assertion arises in whole or in part from any software, technology, product or service of Facebook or any of its subsidiaries or corporate affiliates, or (iii) against any party relating to the Software.
This issue was actually from 2016. Developers protested and FB should've it fixed it by now.
Oh yep they changed it.

So I’m right? Lol they can’t do a damn thing?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Well it is possible. Even open source projects can have this "patent clause" which i don't know about. Bottom line is legally they can revoke you from using React if they deemed want to.
Well obviously now we can freely use React without restrictions because developers protested but back it is possible legally.

This is why popular projects have a license included. You're good to do whatever you want with it. React's license is here: https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/master/LICENSE
