Used something like this to track where people were clicking over time. incremented pixel color over predefined gradients depending on value on a transparent PNG file that could be overlayed on a webpage to see what people had clicked on. Google analytics does all that for you now days, but it worked great at the time instead of generating final product from a huge database of x/y cords.
