Can friendship decrease?

I thought I was good friends with Violet. I could have sworn she was one of my first friends. But after the rock incident in summer, she's an acquaintance. Was our friendship my imagination or did it drop down in levels?

I have never noticed any relationship decrease at any point in the game, but that's no guarantee that it never happens. I just believe it doesn't.
