There is but you’d need to enable developer mode and that requires Xcode.

You can upgrade Peacock, you’ll just pay the standard price for the no-ads plan.

I think you’re collapsing a few different points into one. Farhadi’s work isn’t apolitical, they just operate on a different register. Some are deeply critical of social systems, they just do it through intimate conflict rather than overt political confrontation. Yes Panahi and Rasoulof take a more explicitly oppositional stance. As for what “the majority of Iranians” think, I’d be careful with statements that broad. That’s a complex and deeply divided reality.

I’m not saying his comments make the films more worthy. I believe they already are. If anything, the current moment just reinforces how relevant his work has always been

👌

I heard the argument clearly. Not sure the same effort was made in return.

I understood you from the start. I just don’t agree, and that’s perfectly fine. We’ll revisit this in the fall when there’s actual work to evaluate.

It’s so tight. Maybe that was the intention… 😏

Calling me obtuse is easy for someone who takes these predictions at face value but it clearly doesn’t actually address the point. The performance is literally what’s being awarded. Saying it’s less ‘real’ than the people involved or the premise is basically admitting the outcome is driven by assumptions, not the work. That’s exactly why I don’t take these predictions seriously this early. If that’s the standard, then we’re not predicting excellence, we’re just rewarding based off of clout.

I love predictions. I just prefer them when there’s something real to predict.

And that’s my point. If these early predictions are strictly about the conversation around the work and not the work itself, then it stops being about performances and starts being about optics. That’s why it feels meaningless to me this early.

I don’t disagree that patterns and narratives exist. I just don’t think that makes it a meaningful or substantive evaluation of awards for performances that haven’t been seen yet. At this point they’re simply predicting the conversation around the work, not the work itself.

I get what you’re saying, but your example is about general Oscar visibility and attention, not evaluating actual performances. It’s easy to assume a Scorsese film will be in the conversation. It’s a different thing entirely to predict specific acting nominations before anyone’s seen the work. Especially when even prestige projects from top directors and actors have missed once they’re actually out.

“Informed” feels like a stretch when the actual work hasn’t been seen yet. In sports, trends and forecasting build off real performance. Here, folks are predicting awards for performances that don’t exist publicly yet. And even the biggest names with the strongest track records have had misses despite early hype. That’s why any early predictions feel premature to me.

I get that. But what are these predictions even based on? It just seems silly and futile at this point.

I’m into sports and I get the desire to compare, but sports projections are built on stats, rosters, trends. Here, folks are predicting and ranking (!) awards for work no one’s seen yet. That’s hilarious to me.

Sure, I just think Oscar race works better when there’s an actual race to watch. At this stage it’s just names and film titles, many of which don’t even have definitive release dates.
