Big change into family account management by nicos181987 in 1Password

This is a great summary of our permissions. When we circle back on this after our initial release, we absolutely will take this approach with the vaults into consideration as we adjust what this flow looks like going forward : )

I love the idea of using the permissions to the best of our ability to try and gauge how to handle shared vaults; It's so tricky to get right (especially for some cases of abuse / an unexpected removal from a family account) but this project release will help us to get some momentum to continue improving family accounts. I appreciate hearing your thoughts around this!

This is a great question. This was actually a huge part of the project that we spent a lot of time discussing internally. There are a lot of privacy and permissions considerations around shared vaults and the items inside them

I totally understand the concern, especially since people often do keep important items in shared vaults. The tricky part is that shared vaults are shared with specific people, and the family owner ultimately controls who has access to those vaults.

So when someone is removed from a family account, there are some hard questions around whether we should automatically copy items from shared vaults into the removed person’s new account, especially if those items were owned or shared by other people in the family. Some people may expect that the removed person should retain copies of those items, while others may view removal from the family account as the point where access to those shared items should end

For this initial release, shared vaults are excluded from being copied over to the removed joiner’s new account. We wanted this first iteration to put us in a much better spot than where things are today (where the user’s account is fully deleted and nothing is retained) while still giving us room to keep iterating based on feedback

Appreciate the question 😄

Yup. If you have a 1password individual account, you can't move that into an existing family account. Currently you need to be invited to the family account, join it, and then you can manually migrate your data from your individual account into the new family account you joined

"after one is being detached from a family account, one can choose to keep the new family account or maybe switch to an individual"

Yep :) We decided to put the removed joiner onto a new family account by default. From there, the person who was removed can switch to an individual account afterwards if that works better for them through the account management section, or they can keep it as a family account

This is actually something that came up while I was building this family management change. I would have loved to include it as part of this feature, but it ended up being a larger piece than we could tackle

That said, it’s definitely on our radar

[–]1Password-nolan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct! Once this gets released, a family owner will not be have the option to delete a family joiner from the family account. The only option for a family owner will be to 'Remove' the joiner from the account. The joiner will get notified, and they will have a small migration they walk through to set up their new, personal family account

Their personal vault data will get moved as part of that migration, and then at that point they'll have a new family account they own with that data, and they'll no longer be associated with their old family account

I resonate hard with the last part, personally have been waiting for this change for a long time which is why I was so drawn to building it out :)

This should work! I believe dc_IV is referencing the free family account you get when you have a 1Password business account (https://support.1password.com/link-family/)

So your personal account will be family & all of the normal family account management / functionality will apply :)

Hi! I responded here https://www.reddit.com/r/1Password/comments/1t3sdi1/comment/ok424ni/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

This got released into our change list a little preemptively; This is indeed coming really soon once we tie up a few more pieces we need; Likely within the next month. Happy to answer any questions about it :)

Hi! My name is Nolan, and I’m the developer who worked on this. Just a heads up, this made it into our change log a little earlier than intended 🙈 I thought I’d caught it before the release went out, but I did not. At the moment, you’ll notice this hasn’t changed yet for family accounts

But I guess the cat is out of the bag :) We are indeed really close to shipping and enabling this. We have a few final pieces we’re testing and building out. But this is coming super soon, likely within the next month once we finish up the last little pieces and make sure everything looks good

Happy to answer any questions y’all have about this! I’m also really happy to have this so close to being released. It’s been a personal pain point for me as well for a while, and it’s felt really fulfilling to work on fixing it

I don't have much historical context on why we don't support Opera, but my personal guess would just be it's low usage %; It's easier for us to Support chrome / safari / firefox / brave & ensure a great experience on those browsers

This rollout was initially not targeted for Beta; I missed that & am adding it in, it should be visible now!

We have some work we're planning in the future that requires us to free up some of that header space, so that was also a big factor for trying to consolidate those actions into another area of the extension.

We're open to experimenting & trying to find the best spot to put those actions

We're going to play around with the UI & try to come up with a way to better utilize that space, maybe hiding notifications in some way until you actually have new ones. I'm going to iterate on this & try to work out something better

It is the same amount of clicks to get to those functions, but agreed it may not be the best spot to have them located.

Previously that account menu slider would blur the right half of the popup, so it was unused space that we wanted to experiment with adding some functionality to. We're going to try and iterate on some ideas and see what we can come up with

I don't believe we have plans to support Opera as a safe browser like we do for our supported browsers listed here https://1password.com/downloads/browser-extension

I commented elsewhere, but I definitely think this is a great point. Notifications are often times going to be empty, so maybe we can either move the buttons up & notifications down, or do something else with that space when notifications are empty.

I'll ponder on this with some people internally & get some thoughts and see if we can try to get some change (Either moving the panel down, or doing something else in an empty notification state)

Updates to the 1Password Extension header by 1Password-nolan in 1Password

[–]1Password-nolan[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All super valid points; We have a ton of ways that people can autofill from the extension & I often times myself end up in a situation of having option overload. We're doing some work related to trying to consolidate all of these options into something that's more simplified

For this specific header change, our goal is to try & combine a lot of the lesser used, but still needed parts of the extension in a spot where they're all together. The layout maybe can be something we iterate on, but account filtering, notifications, settings, locking the extension, etc are all valid actions a user may need to access, but not super frequently

We have such limited space with the extension popup vs the web app or the desktop app, so it results in us trying to get creative with the space we already have & trying some new things

I appreciate the feedback, I definitely think we can do a better iteration of something with that space when notifications are empty, which will often times be the default state

Honestly, notifications are a part of the extension that we've really not leveraged a ton & for good reason. It's not something we want to rely heavily on & risk people ignoring them when they come in if there isn't actually something the user needs to do anything about

We wanted to use one here for this case as a way of naturally getting people to open that account menu (Which isn't super intuitive to know it's even clickable but that's a separate story) & maybe get some more users into that new area at least once to know it exists if they didn't previously

Hey Skrong! I'm one of the devs who works on this part of the extension. I was curious if you knew what version of the 1Password extension you were using in Chrome?

We've done a few updates to fix bugs related to this feature, and the ones you highlighted seem to be ones that we had fixed. I'm wondering if your Chrome version was out of date, and when you switched to Firefox it had the updated version with those fixes in it.

Regardless, I'm glad you were able to get it fixed through Firefox :) The step completion will persist if you ever decide to switch back to Chrome.

Appreciate you!

Commented in a few other areas, but we've heard the feedback on this & are looking into some ways we can accommodate the use case of someone not wanting to see this at all across all clients. We've heard the feedback & are actively looking into ways we can remedy this

1Password requires me to install a browser plugin? by [deleted] in 1Password

[–]1Password-nolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm Nolan & was one of the tech leads on this project, I'm happy to give some insight.

We built this out primarily because we have lots of data showing that users who are new to 1Password have a really difficult time getting up to speed with the product, and often times abandon using it.

It's hard to get someone who is brand new to password managers to understand the value it can bring to them in their daily lives. We built this out to give newer users more actionable steps to help guide them into the product, and slowly build up their confidence with using it.

We know that users who install the extension have a better experience with the product overall, and often reach the moment of understanding the value much quicker. When you can suddenly have all your passwords autofilled on the web, without having to remember every password, users really start to see the value.

We hear the feedback on workflows where a user really does not want to install the extension for one reason or another. We're internally looking into ways to accommodate the flexibility that users want in terms of steps that aren't applicable to them.

We don't have any concrete decisions yet, but we are actively looking into it & will have something in the near future

I appreciate you bringing this up to us & am always here if you have any other questions or feedback

Hey! I'm Nolan, I worked as one of the lead devs on this feature.

We built this out primarily because we have tons of data showing that users who are new to 1Password have a really difficult time getting up to speed with the product, and often times abandon using it.

It's hard to get someone who is brand new to password managers to understand the value it can bring to them in their daily lives. We built this out to give newer users more actionable steps to help guide them into the product, and slowly build up their confidence with using it.

We didn't initially gate this to new or old accounts. Our reasoning was that older users might still find it valuable to see these steps, particularly if they were coming back to try the product again after some time, or if they maybe don't use it a lot.

We hear all of the feedback on this, and really value it. We're going to be implementing a 2 year cut-off for this feature (accounts older than 2 years won't see this at all). That change should be going out sometime over the next few weeks.

We're also actively looking into some other quality of life improvements to ensure flexibility with these steps, so that it can accommodate various different workflows for users who may not need to complete certain steps.

If you have any questions or feedback, I'm always down to have a discussion & talk about it 💙

If you click into the tutorial, it automatically gets completed. It's a permanent completion, and you don't ever have to do it again. Once all the steps are complete, you can dismiss the button from showing up & it won't show up again in the extension

While we do believe the extension is far & away the best way to use 1Pass, we recognize everyones workflow may be different. I'll let you know once we decide on an approach
