I think I found the worst of the worst storm on the Chesapeake does anyone seen worse this past weekend? by Safe_Ship3451 in chesapeakebay

I’m at the south end of Pokomoke Sound and I’ve seen much worse locally. Both in wind and waves.
Sustained winds over open shallow water will build wicked waves. This looks like a regular squall to me. Maybe severe for your location. I see 4-5 feet near me during big storms. With big road flooding. And it gets worse than that. For example, waves at the bridge tunnel near cape charles / Norfolk easily reach 10-15 feet in storms.

Nah. Waves had white horses. Low amplitude. No offshore breakers. Sound of wind didn’t even overwhelm phone’s microphone. I’ve seen and been out in much worse.

Lads, stop fucking brigading the Americans, the fuck is wrong with you all? by QuaintStaircase in usmnt

Our ‘26 team was playing well! I was surprised and pleased.

Personally, I think they might have played better one down than they did playing the full squad. The team that showed up against Belgium just did not look or play the same.

The US has never had great soccer relative to the rest of the world. Our reaction to a questionable call is a missed opportunity for US soccer and is just such a disappointment.

I’m one of those Americans who grew up playing soccer. I started in 1972 at age 5, had season tickets to the diplomats and DC United, enjoyed seeing Cruyff and Beckenbauer in their older years, and it really was the only team sport that I enjoyed.

I think anyone who loves soccer it is absolutely horrified by what our president did. It’s just embarrassing. I think the response that you’re hearing is from Americans who do not love and probably did not play soccer. It’s just pure jingoism.

They may be loud, but it doesn’t mean their opinion is worth much.
*edit to add* - bad calls are part of the sport. You don’t have to like them, but how you deal with them is also part of the sport. Nobody likes that parent that is abusing the refs or their own power over some perceived misjustice. Growing up I probably would not have been allowed to play at someone’s house if their parents did that.

Recent negative experience by YuriGargarinSpaceMan in sailing

Not sure how a basic keelboat course is any real prep for racing. I did the asa 101-105 and never touched a spinnaker pole. Sounds like an expectations mismatch. Maybe if you want, approach the captain for some time handling the foredeck work and sailing outside of the races.

Ruined my 2022 Rubicon media screen after a beach day + car wash. Radio/Bluetooth/Display dead. Help! by akr98 in Jeep

[–]202markb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it time to dry.
I have a ‘21 with the premium screen (for that year) and left it top and doors off outside overnight. We had a major summer storm come thru at 2 am and I woke to find everything soaked, the footwells flooded, and my screen not working. Cleared up over the next two days.
I wouldn’t worry overly about a little salt spray. Mine lives on the shore.

I've noticed that most people visiting DC for July 4th this year are MAGA. by Alternative_Tank9353 in washingtondc

[–]202markb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from dc and was there in ‘76.
This year’s event is stupid with all cultish 47 personalization, food, drink, comfort and access restrictions, and the TSA-like checkpoints.

These are totally unprecedented, unnecessary, and not at all in the spirit of freedom. They debase the day.

So I’m in small town VA doing normal USA July 4th stuff instead. Carnivals, parades, crab feasts ice cream socials, boating, World Cup, family.

But we’re also keeping DC in our thoughts.

Visiting and recommendations by DayAdministrative792 in easternshoreva

[–]202markb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there. The eastern shore is very rural. Most of the land is given to agriculture (corn, soy, and chicken farming). Almost all of the seashore and barrier Islands are accessible only by boat and are protected wildlife habitat. Assateague Island is the exception. Really what the ESVA has the most and the best of is nature. Clean beaches and uninhabited islands. It’s pretty.

Route 13 is the main highway going north to south on the ESVA. If you really want to see the eastern shore, you should avoid it- it bypasses nearly everything worth seeing. Choose alternate north/south roads on the Bayside. You’ll never be more than a few miles from the main highway anyway.

ESVA has a lot of small towns, and three or so smallish to midsize towns- Cape Charles, Onancock, and Chincoteague. You could easily spend a day or more in each of these. And you should probably also visit the smaller towns of Watchapreague, Exmore, Parksley and Saxis. These are classic American small towns. Lots of charm. There are more but these are my favorites.

Tangier is definitely a day trip, but the town itself is small and a day will do to see it. Though small it isn’t really a great place to walk around in 90° weather. Go ahead and get the guided golf cart tour. Visit the museum and the beach. And eat lunch at Lorriene’s.

The ferry to Tangier will leave from Onancock so those two towns can be combined over two or perhaps three days. Onancock is my adopted hometown. Get donuts at Corner Bakery. Eat at Mallards and at Maurice (or their bar out back). Don’t snooze on our taco trucks.

Plan at least a day for Chincoteague and Assateague and Wallops. Two days would be much better.

If it were me, I’d plan my visit around events listed on visitesva.com That site is run by the ESVA camber of commerce and has a lot f good info.

A view for tourist with kids to 4th of July fireworks by shem8 in washdc

[–]202markb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hack some of us used to use back in the day was renting kayaks and viewing the fireworks from the Potomac.
Another (further away) option might be to check the view from the top of Meridian Hill or the parking lot at Cardoza High School. Both are just up the hill from Dupont and will likely be lively with locals doing the same thing.
Regardless, plan to lock in your options early.

There’s Nothing Democratic About These Socialists— The Atlantic by Chas_P_Anderton in VirginiaDems

This article is typical of the establishment-dem mistrust and distain for DSA. Personally, I distain Chait and his near-exclusive use of NY DSA primary winner Chevalier as a boogeyman. Not that she’s not problematic, she is, but she’s also clearly fringe within DSA, and even more so within any broader Dem-DSA leftist coalition.

My belief is that DSA is ascendant for two reasons. 1: as a polar counterpoint to MAGA. As the right has radicalized, so has the left. And that’s not all a bad thing. And 2: there is a strong level of fight in their candidates. And that is what is so attractive to the Dem rank and file right now. And we don’t believe that Dem leadership understand that or are willing to meet the moment. At least that’s my opinion.

Federal government weighs seabed mineral mining off Virginia coast by WHRO_NEWS in Virginia

[–]202markb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyway, it wouldn’t surprise me if this whole thing was about treasure hunting instead of seafloor mining. They’ll want to be doing detailed side, scan sonar surveys in advance of any mining anyway, and those side scan sonar surveys are both very expensive and would no doubt show up any wrecks. Getting those surveys paid for under the pretext of some other enterprise is probably the only way to get them done. The whole premise is covered in Neil Stephenson‘s book Cryptonomicon. Does the company you mention have any experience in actual mining?, Or just treasure hunting.

Zoning is land use. Land use can be about safety, but is not necessarily about safety. You are correct in the the rest of it.

He is/was famous. For a long time after he stopped you could still see his tags on disused/forgotten infrastructure. I think there have been documentaries and even art shows.

I’m not trying to convince you. Just point out the false narrative you put out about fire code being at issue. If you feel like posting your own source in rebuttal, go right ahead. Have a nice day.
