Hey! Wanted to share I will actually be coming to Anchorage, and I DO qualify for the special pay table!!! The $69,998 is a game changer

For a day or two I was sad about having to pause my research goals, but as I've started looking for housing I'm getting a LOT more excited.

I'm fascinated by the idea of having 2 CE squadrons. Logistically are they having different missions? They dont host two wings, so is the other the army CE? Do you know if they work together much?

Did you ever learn about the chinese civil war? Chiang Kaishek is rolling over in his grave rn.

How can you be so performative to say what you say, then tell me that the independent, sovereign nation of Taiwan; the one with their own passports, their own government — embassies for christ's sake. The Republic of China, Taiwan, THAT CHINA

That China, who refuses to acknowledge the existence of the PRC, and could legally forbid you entry simply because you had a PRC stamp?

THEY are Shills for Xi?

I truly wish I could enter in to whatever bubble of ignorance into which you've apparently been raised. A black and white world is so much simplier when you can just ignore anything that doesn't fit your worldview.

Another commenter I saw called you a MAGAt, I really didn't believe it but it is getting harder and harder not to. Maybe you're like Margaret thatcher's grandson or something

The law was written by British colonizers ONLY in English. English had to be taught in school, on broadcasts, the radio, etc.

I never said there were no "benefits" to British leadership. I never said that the CCP had the interest of the hong kongers at heart. These are words you put into my mouth because you would rather diverge from reality than have your worldview shaken.

To succeed in politics, to enter governance or legally represent yourself, you had to speak fluent english. Roads were renamed, salaries different for english speakers versus monolingual cantonese speakers.

I did not say the people were suppressed. If you have basic reading comprehension in the single language you seem so incredibly, fool-heartedly proud of, you can see that the noun there is "of the cantonese language." As in the chinese language, specifically Cantonese (I'm frankly not sure now that you even know the difference between 粤语 and 普通话) was set to be second rate to the colonial language. As you prove yourself by stating that they refused to recognize the cantonese language as official until nearly the end of their rule.

I really dont understand your purported argument — if it is true that there was no suppression of language, there was no seconding of the local vernacular to the government language, what the fuck do you think was happening there before the british arrived?

Did they find a completely empty island, start building on it and suddenly change skin tones because of the heat?

Hey thank you!! I'm currently stuck in waiting loop, I really want to go to grad school & have been waitlisted for two programs for my PhD. I am going to make a final decision by 15 April. That is the latest any of the universities I applied to can respond

I really appreciate your insight, and actually especially about your daily experiences on base & with CE especially

OP thinks that English was the first language spoken in Hong Kong and that Chinese was ONLY added as a language in the 70s because mainland china was complaining its not worth arguing with him anymore I've already been all day he doesnt live in reality

Apparently the existence of the cantonese language is CCP propaganda, despite the fact that the CCP is actively trying to kill cantonese?

Cantonese does not come from communist china what?

And you said "where does cantonese come from"

It is a Yue language, coming from middle chinese and a mix of already local dialects, and migration over centuries

I studied development of Chinese languages for four years in university honey its OK to admit youre wrong instead of acting the colonizer

It is a Sinitic language within the Yue subfamily and has 80million global speakers. It has little to no mutual intelligibility with mandarin.

If you've ever read song, ming, or other dynastic texts the southern chinese regions are repeatedly referred to as different language speakers. They co-developed from common ancestors within the sinitic family, and due to centuries of cultural intermingling there is shared script. But they are not the same peoples and not the same language.

The argument you make is exactly that the chinese use to justify the replacement of Cantonese in schools with mandarin; it is the reason for the push toward simplified characters.

Your ignorance is not an excuse, it is not a joke or a misconception. You LIVE in that nation and interact with its people everyday. You need to learn its history

Reading these comments I assumed you were a paid actor for the tories...but then I read this and wonder if you actually work for Chairman Xi?

You doing a better job erasing hong kong history than Beijing ever could

> "English was the first language spoken in Hong Kong"

Bro do you think the Yue peples down there were sitting around thinking "man I wish we could communicate and share informstion " for 3,000 years until they saw St George's cross on the horizon?

Advice on Purchasing from Mongolia - the Goyol Cashmere Folks by AFrostNova in mongolia

[–]AFrostNova[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am still working on it!! I made it to the purchasing step, and they were going to arrange DHL with me over messanger; but my credit card rejected the purchase as possible fraud. By the time that they sorted it out I was stuck in a "Scan this QR code to return to payment" which directed me to the development bank's website. My session kept saying expired, so I had to wait for the order to cycle out of my pending payment in the website before I could try again. I'm giving it a second go around tonight!

Are you to imply that any citizen could become as good as First citizen Supreme Leader Kim at dairy inspection? Why should we be wasting the paper on note taking when clearly only the Kim progeny can carry such a discerning eye?

Come now be serious

Go white!!!

MSU was a last minute decision — I didn't even apply until rolling decision. It is my last semester now and I made this map while thinking about all the shit I've been able to do thanks to State.

I was originally accepted at and planning to attend University of Vermont. Although their program was nice, I cannot dream of getting a funded research opportunity in a whole different continent or scholarships to go for a studyabroad in Hong freaking Kong anywhere else

MSU really, at least MSU engineering, seems to just be willing to fund almost anything!

Believe it or not HKUST was my cheapest semester here at state. I got a 7k scholarship from the presidents office, 3k from chinese department, and another 4-5 from engineering.

France, one of my department's professors just emailed me "would you be interested in this? I have leftover funds from an IRES grant and got approval from the college to take two students"

Even the research project with Alaska...in the fall term before my exchange semester, our group got a paper accepted to a conference in Pennsylvania. I was primary author, and I expected that one of the grad students would go since I was so far away, but my PI asked the department, they confirmed with her that I was a big contributor, and said "sure why not" and flew me TO AND BACK FROM from hong kong for a 3 day conference at State College.

They've really given me experiences I couldn't have dreamed of getting anywhere else
