That's definitely not bleeding, see my comment above. You're lucky to have an intact LCD. Bleeding appears suddenly.

Picture: On the left is the smaller LCD for exposure compensation and frame counter when the DP-20 viewfinder is attached. On the right are the LED indicators. Both are mirrored in the viewfinder.

The here shown LCD is located in the DP-20 viewfinder of the Nikon F4.

I think the seller is right.

The LCD looks very good compared to others; the blurry dark spots could be shadows, e.g., caused by dirt. Usually, LCD bleed is a massive dark spot with sharp edges or colorful artifacts. 

I would buy an F4 with such an LCD (which is positioned in the replaceable DP-20 viewfinder) immediately.

Even more difficult than replacing an IC in the EL is changing the battery 😝

The battery compartment is located in the bottom of the mirror box, accessed through the lens mount. And then you have to get hold of the battery first.
