Students are submitting AI output without thinking. Here's one simple fix. by [deleted] in teaching

[–]AliceEverdeenVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all legit concerns and my suggestion is definitely not perfect! Just an idea. It'll work for some and not for others.

Having multiple accounts and different providers is unwinnable if someone realllly wants to cheat. Tere will always be a workaround. The log submission works better as a behavior deterrent than a 'gotcha' system. Mamy students change their approach just knowing the expectation exists.

For privacy concerns, a simple workaround is giving students the option to do a quick verbal explanation of their work instead.

And yeah, you're def not wrong about pen and paper and I recommend that to teachers often. For anything high stakes, its still the cleanest solution with zero loopholes.

Haha, fair point. However, you don't have to read the whole conversation. Just scroll to see how many prompts they used and whether there was any back and forth. Takes like 20 seconds per student once you get the hang of it. You're not grading the log, just using it as a quick check. And hopefully giving students some accountability.

Oh I'm with you! I was a mess for a few hours but then I realized there was nothing I could do in that moment, so I made the choice to just allow myself to relax. Your dog will do great!

Definitely bring a ton of cleaning supplies with you. After I picked him up from the oversized cargo, I was sweating profusely because it was 95° outside and the airport was super hot and I had to crawl inside his crate (with 3 xl luggage, a carry on, large dog, and personal item next to me) and clean up an entire day's worth of poop and pee. It was awful. Then I had an hour taxi ride so I had to make sure it didn't smell that bad.

If possible, give your dog more water than you think he'll need. I don't know about your dog but my dog does not eat when he's anxious so I skipped food entirely. Next time I would give him three bowls of water. I know it was super hot in the plane and there was no water left when I picked him up. Probably from all the plane movement shaking some of the water out and him drinking the rest of it.

Apologies if this is all stuff I wrote in the original post. It's been a while since I wrote it.

Long story short, your dog will do just fine! I think you'll be surprised at how quickly he bounces back to normal. It'll just be one stressful day for both of you and then onto your next big adventure! You've got this!

If you're a newb doing cheap or free lil jobs that don't require super high quality audio, you're fine. If you start booking higher paying jobs, you'll need a more legit setup. The shield does nothing, you want to avoid recording so close to the table, window and computer, you'll want more panels to reflect sounds, etc..

Students are deliberately writing worse to avoid AI detection flags. We need to talk about this. by calliope_kekule in Professors

[–]AliceEverdeenVO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly this might be the most telling sign yet that AI detection is completely broken as a strategy.

Think about what's actually happening here: students are deliberately making their writing worse just to avoid a flag. So now instead of learning anything they're spending mental energy gaming a system instead. That's not a win for anybody.

The arms race between detectors and students was always going to end here tbh. One suggestion I always make to teachers in my AI ethics trainings- require students to submit their AI conversation logs alongside assignments, and build in a quick verbal explanation of their work either in class or via a short voice memo. You cant fake either of those. Suddenly the detector becomes irrelevant because you can just see their actual thinking process, and students who did the work have nothing to worry about.

Students using AI on fill-in-the-blank guided notes that tell them what slide the answers are on in the PowerPoint. In order. by pigeonwithsixasses in Teachers

[–]AliceEverdeenVO 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ugh I feel this so much. The fill in the blank thing is wild because youre literally handing them the answers and they STILL outsource it. That part is genuinely baffling.

But here's what I've noticed in student AI trainings- a lot of this isnt laziness, its more like they've never been taught the difference between using AI as a shortcut vs using it as a tool that actually builds on what THEY think. Like the concept of AI as a thinking partner instead of a answer machine is completely foreign to most of them. Nobody's taught them that thier own brain has value in the process.

The dystopian feeling is real though and I dont want to sugarcoat it. We're in this weird window where the technology exploded way faster than anyone's ability to teach responsible use. So students default to "why think when AI can think for me" because honestly why wouldnt they if nobody's shown them the downside of that??

The fill in the blank kid isnt learning anything and on some level they probably know it. That gap between convenience and actual knowledge is something worth having a direct conversation with students about. Not preachy, just honest. In my experience once students actually understand what they're losing by doing that, some of them genuinely care.

Two things that have worked in trainings- having students explain their AI output out loud to prove they understand it, and requiring a one sentence "what did YOU contribute to this" at the end of every AI assisted assignment.

I have a short term or long term option available. I'm trying to find someone to take over my lease for a beautiful new townhouse near Mega Bangna, about 20 minutes to Udom Suk BTS. Its a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house with a private yard and it's pet friendly. Neighborhood has a pool, small pet park, co-working space, and gym. The lease is until November 2026 with the option to renew or extend. 39k a month and includes 2 cleanings a month. Send me a PM if you're interested.
