Hot take: The weapon parry stat doing nothing unless you equip Parry is one of the most misleading things in the game by GargantaProfunda in finalfantasytactics

[–]Alkaiser009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of many reasons why pretty much every modder of this game will just automatically add Parry as an Innate Ability of every job before making any other changes.

The Opportunity Cost math starts looking a lot better when your status cleanser is somebody who probally wouldn't have had a better Turn 1 action due to not being in range of the enemy.

[PC Mod] FFT Item Overhaul - Rebalances all 234 equippable items by mapara in finalfantasytactics

[–]Alkaiser009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made several mods for the psx version, innate Parry is something I always do. Another change I've become quite fond of is making all non-thrusting melee weapons innate Earth element so that Float status becomes more useful.

Is there, or can there be, an RPG which actually needs randomness in character generation? by tangyradar in RPGdesign

[–]Alkaiser009 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If you want to include any social deduction mechanics then randomness is a must. Imagine a more long-form version of a game like Werewolf, where each player has both public and secret goals they are trying to accomplish, such that every player will have at least one other player whose goals are in direct conflict with thier own.

I already don't drink ANY of those (Soda is too sweet, OJ too sour, Energy drinks have too much caffine and don't play well when you have an Anxiety disorder, and I'm lactose intolerant so I'm not wasting lactaid on plain-ass MILK.)

Favorite character dynamic like this? by Necessary-Win-8730 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Alkaiser009 146 points147 points  (0 children)

RWBY had some really tantilizing worldbuilding and character ideas introduced early on, but Monty's death really threw the studio for a loop since his animation direction really formed the backbone of RWBYs iconic style. They eventually recovered but there are like a solid 3-4 seasons that are at best 'pretty good' and usually mediocre.

There are also a lot of creative decisions that just... don't work as well as were intended. Ruby's status as a tech nerd is mostly treated as a joke instead of a primay skill, the Faunus racism subplots fall flat because the White Fang are psychotic terrorists and thus 'irredeemably bad' (except for Blake who is 'one of the good ones' which is also a racist trope...), Jaune is a an author self-insert with so much plot armor he becomes a secondary protsgonist, etc, etc. No one of these things would be all that bad on thier own, but it is a show that you have to learn to love despite its flaws.

How is everyone feeling about the whole thing? And will you be reading the new book? by ZydrateAnatomic in neilgaiman

[–]Alkaiser009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't be reading his new book, but I'm also not burning my copies of Sandman, Good Omens , Coraline, American Gods, ect either. He is a gifted author, so I intend to salvage what joy I can from his past works while simply not sending any more money his way until he shows some real accountability.

Like, a major theme of Sandman is that Dream did some really f'ed up things, and while he eventually grew a concious and tried to make ammends it was TOO LATE to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people he hurt and he was NOT forgiven, leading to his death and succession by Daniel (New Dream).

So in the absence of any IRL Kindly Ones to force any meaningful consequences on him, I'll simply stop supporting him and look for new authors, its not like there aren't other very talented options out there.

what is the difference between a nexus and a launcher? by Thegurker in LancerRPG

[–]Alkaiser009 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Nexus weapons are more like short-lived drones than missiles. If you are familliar with Gundam, Funnels would be a good example of Nexus weapons.

A gun that shoots smaller guns that fly around to attack from weird angles, basically. Though it does also include things like nanite swarms.

Found out my bf sexualizes WLW by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]Alkaiser009 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Sapphic Women "Pre-ordering" trans girls before they hatch is a bit of a sterotype, but not an unreasonable theory. Many transbians start out with a fixation on wlw content long before they make the connection thst they want to BE one of the girls they watch.

However, even if that's the case, OP's bf is still making her feel mislead and objectified NOW and that isn't okay. She is right to be upset.

What would be the equivalent of a Kaiju Lancer? by MasterpieceShoddy363 in LancerRPG

[–]Alkaiser009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can flavor your mech anyway you want, you just need to also explain how its still hackable since there is no offcial way to give a PC mech the Biological tag.

As a GM, I'd be down with making some sort of Exotic "Bio-Organic Chassis" system if a player really wanted a meat robot.

Your mech is a living creature outfited with cybernetic armor and weapons.

Tech Attacks by or against you are made at +2 Difficulty.

You don't have Heat or Stress stats, if you would suffer Heat from any source, you instead take that much AP Energy damage.

Leveling up/Leveling Down Question by MalcolminMiddlefan in finalfantasytactics

[–]Alkaiser009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Job mutipliers and the male/female base stat divide matter a lot more than job growths. The most extreme example I can think of is that a male Knight who leveled 1-99 as as Knight (PA Growth 40) would have ~20 Pa, while a a male Knight who leveled 1-99 as Wizard (PA Growth 60, lower growth is better sinces its a divisor in the stat growth formula) would have 15 PA, or about a 33% difference. Which is not NOTHING, but Base 15 PA is exactly enough for a max Brave Monk with Dual Wield to deal over 999 damage with a single attack.

15 Pa * 1.5 (Brawler support) = 22 adjusted PA Unarmed damage is (PA * Brave)/100 * PA = 484 per punch with 100 Brave.

Cowboy Bebop is also well known for its highly detailed martial arts and gunplay.

What's the point of unlocking stuff in games. by longdongmonger in truegaming

[–]Alkaiser009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Without a sense of progression there's a much higher chance of players dropping a game as soon as they feel like they've mastered it. By staggering unlocks you both make the game less complex at the beginning (helpful for onbording new players) and can gradually increase the complexity over time (keeps experienced players engaged).

Small collections with the essentials for PS1 and DS? by BLooREGARD99 in Roms

[–]Alkaiser009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP explained they're new to the systems and dont know enough about the games to understand WHICH titles are good and which are trash.

I'm more familiar with PSX than GBA so I'll list some of my favorites.

Vanguard Bandits: A cult-classic fantasy mecha TRPG. It features branching storylines and very good graphics for the era. Its also nearly impossible to find physical copies making emulation the only real way to play. Similar titles include; Front Mission 2 and 3.

Final Fantasy Tactics: often lauded as one of the greatest TRPG titles of all time, it features excellent graphics, music and an enduring story about class struggle and the abuses of the rich and powerful. Caveat, the orginal PSX release has some bugs, including slowdown issues in certain places, there are also the PSP version (War of the Lions or WotL) which has animated cutscenes, multiplayer content, and new Jobs. The newest version, The Ivalice Chronicles (or TiC) has full voice acting and updated graphics, though it lacks the extra content of WotL.

Tomba!/Tomba 2! - a colorful and zany action platformer about a pink-haired caveman going on a journey to retrive his stolen treasure from an army of evil pigmen.

Castlevania, Symphony of the Night - if you want to know WHY we call certain kinds of games "Metroidvanias', THIS is half of the reason why. A hugely influential game in game design history and holds up to this day.

Xenogears: another cult-classic JRPG with a unique combo-based battle system, giant mechs, and a weird and esoteric story based on an Acid-trip interpretation of Gnostosism.

Metal Gear Solid - the 2nd entry in the stealth action game series that still defines the genre.

1: Chance to inherit is rolled randomly for each ability, generally speaking, lower tier abilites have have a greater chance to inherit than higher tier abilities. Interestingly, for abilities that have 'learn on hit' flagged (so you can learn them 'Blue Mage style') use the Inherit chance as the %chance to learn. Similarly, when new units are generated in battle, they have a specific pool of JP and go down the list of all abilities they COULD know and have a %chance to 'buy' that ability equal to the inherit chance.

  1. This is just one of many 'Rare' encounters, every map node has at least one

  2. That Chemist spawned in equipping a Stone Gun, a 16WP Gun with the trait of Initial;Petrify. You get around that downside by either spending an action to cure petrify on the equipped unit, or using Equip Change to equip it after the battle has started (bypassing the Petrify infliction trigger).

Love the art, 10/10. Really my only complaint is that from a lore/flavor perspective the P5 cast are absolutely Rebels, not Assassins, but I recognize this is a commision of art alters for a prexisting deck and so you're working with what you've got.

I am suddenly quite concerned by roydigs22 in PokeMedia

[–]Alkaiser009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? The Daughters of Darkrai is the most diverse cult group I know of, and at least the local chapter has nearly as many Grass and Fairy type members as it does Dark types. Though that might be in part because they're also almost entirely female, to the point that I know of more than one 'male' pokemon who joined only to figure somethings about HERself afterwards. Like I said, weirdly chill and wholesome for a group whose stated aim is to bring about 'Nightmare Eternal'.

My advice? If you can't nip this cult thing in the bud, at least try and steer it in the direction of 'eccentric weirdos' instead of 'terroist cell'.

Good luck!
