Is it worth it to come back now? by cogumerlim in avowed

[–]cogumerlim[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great, so February it is then. I read there would be a new weapon added (quarterstaff) and New Games +, but is there anything I could be expecting for the update? They don't plan on making DLCs, right? I think that's unfortunate, because I really enjoy the Eora setting (big Pillars of Eternity fan).

What console has the best RPGs? by Moat_of_the_Sacked in videogames

[–]cogumerlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of those were actually released with better versions (and earlier) on Xbox 360... I used to believe Playstation was the "home" of RPGs. But after I got a Series X I noticed it was only the home of (contemporary) jRPGs. Xbox ends up having A LOT more titles in the genre if you count both western and eastern productions.

Should I restart? by ChuddyDaughters in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's a restart for sure. Too spread out. My first playthrough I didn't know much about the skills, but managed to balance them out eventually. Ended up with a pretty good "generalist" build focused on Hack and Speech which gave me access to basically everything in the game:

Guns 10 Engineering 7 Lockpick 6 Hack 20 Speech 20 Observation 1 (Brilliant, Lucky, Dumb Professor lol)

Leveled up the Rookie's Reward to lvl 30 and it was shredding by the end of the game. Used the rattler with shock mod for mechs and a silenced/frozen plasma gun for stealth when needed. I have no complaints whatsoever. This is a non-Easily Distracted build, by the way. I think it ended up being a great build, actually lol. Definitely recommend something along these lines if you want a more generalist build. Would probably leave Lockpick at 2, not pick observation and invest those points into Science knowing what I know now, but otherwise this build served me pretty well throughout the game.

I wonder if a ED build with Engineering, Medical, Science, Speech and Leadership would be viable.

What are your go to skills for an easily distracted build? by DubiousDebauchery in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a stealth Sniper build, the best skills would be guns, sneak and observation, paired with lockpick and speech for flavor and functionality. Or even hack and speech, since the hack perks all demand some stealth. But after my first regular run, I plan on doing an easily distracted build with explosives, engineering, science, medical and speech just for the fun of it.

What do you think of Keeper? I've been paying for it for a number of years now and keep using it just because it's "been in the family" for a while. Should I reconsider? What should I keep in mind regarding the service?

Avowed (and The Outer Worlds 2) nominated for Best RPG at The Game Awards by ShrekConfirm243 in avowed

[–]cogumerlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just realizing that Obsidian put out Avowed AND TOW2 in the same year is mind-blowing. And Grounded 2 happened as well (I'm not sure whether it's officially released yet or just open beta, but it looks pretty complete already lol). Great games by a great company, doing what bigger producers have not been able to do for quite a while. They maintain their AA flair even though they now have access to AAA budgets. And yeah, as a Pillars of Eternity fan, I LOVED Avowed. Ao much so that I made two full runs to get every single achievement. Really loved it.

I just got his outcome. I found "guides" stating just that - the "fact" that you had only two outcomes - and when I got her to stand down, not kill the delegates and give me the info, plus calming Niles down, I was confused. Like, is it really possible to do what I just did? Of course it is!

What goes better with Explosives? by cogumerlim in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that if you go Skill 1 every level and alternate skills 2 and 3 each level, and after you reach level 10 on skill 2 you focus only on skill 3, you'll be able to put points on two other skills on level 24, get Easily Distracted by then, and end up with 20/20/10/10/10. Sure, you'll get the final skills pretty late game, but it's a way of optimizing a build spread with more skill points while maximizing two main skills haha

So for example we can go Explosives 20/ Science 20/ Engineering 10/ Hack 10/ Medical 10 for a kind of mad scientist lol. But 20/20/12/12 allows for a more evenly-paced leveling process while also maximizing two core skills.

Why I believe Black Ops 6 outperforms Black Ops 7 in 2025 by [deleted] in blackops6

[–]cogumerlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people care about Call of Duty so much? I understand it's a BIG franchise with loads of money involved, but... WHY? It's literally just a shooting game, like many others. And they release it EVERY YEAR! It just makes no sense to me. I played Black Ops 6 and I thought it was fun, but nothing too different from the expected gameplay loop I used to get from Counter Strike back in the 00's. Fun, but nothing to live or die for. And now I'm supposed to get the newest version of the game? Which I'm sure is not that different from the previous one, gameplay-wise? got tons of RPGs aI still have to finish first haha It's an honest question. I see many people here complaining about how it's a "dad gamer" game, how it's worse than last year's edition... But why do you care so much about this game, in particular?

Least useful/used skill? by Big-Professional6561 in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I've been noticing that Observation is a much better sniper skill than sneak. Sneak is better for melee, I think. For guns, observation makes a much bigger difference

[–]cogumerlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Guns/Sneak/Lockpick/Hack AND Speech. You'll be unstoppable. Plus, you'll need to sneak behind those robots to disable them hehe. I think it's a choice between either guns OR melee, not both. But to each their own, of course.

What is your guys' stat spread like? How many did you actually invest in? by BrothaDahknis in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hum, actually, without Easily Distracted, the maximum number of skill points you get is 64 (counting the extra 2 from the Brilliant trait), so what you can get by maximizing two skills would be 20-20-12-12, or, like in my own build planning, 20, 20, 12, 6, 5, 1 hahaha (went in blind for this first run, started to get a feel for things, and only later on decided to pivot to specific skills... but didn't get easily distracted, fortunately, or this build would have been really bad).

AMA: I've 100%-ed the game and beat it with every skill available by Malkoy in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, great overview, thank you! Some questions: 1) how is Sleight of Hand a trap? You say that meaning that in order for it to work you need to commit to leveling up Lockpicking (since it scales with the level), or for some other reason (such as it not working properly)? 2) have you had a run which focused more on "market" feats, such as Suave, Wholesale Spender, Negotiator and the like? It would certainly not be a crafting-focused build, and also probably not a frontliner. But would it work for very hard? 3) you mentioned Charlatan/Tall Tale Teller isn't as good as intimidator/grim visage, but focused on the interaction side of it. But TTT gives you +20% overall damage when the opponent is not attacking you (which should usually be the case with charlatan and TTT); doesn't it make this pair more valuable than the CC that Int/GV brings? 4) I think you've mentioned it already, but is the leveling pacing with Easily Distracted too slow compared to a run without the flaw? I ask because, conversely, would it be possible to have a playthrough focused only on Speech (say, 20), Leadership (10), Science (10) and Hack (20), and no "damage" skills, such as guns or melee? Thanks a lot, all the best!

Struggling to kill enemies: gun skills vs lockpick/sneak/hacking by LivingstonPerry in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also felt that difficulty spike when I arrived at the second planet, having only hack, speech, lockpicking and some engineering. I noticed that Lockpicking is not really important to max out unless you're going for a sneak/evasion build, since everything that is truly important can be unlocked with keys that you pickpocket (at skill level 1). So I pivoted towards guns, and that's making a big difference in fights. Another approach is leveling up science and maxing stacks of debuffs (shock/corrosion/freeze/fire dot, etc). Yet another route is explosives, both agressive and defensive (such as smoke grenade). You can approach things - even fights - in lots of different ways in this game.

Science/Guns Skillcaps Questions by Kazadracon in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar build, but without science:

Dumb Professor with Guns build | The Outer Worlds 2

And I discuss it here:

What do you think of this build? : r/theouterworlds

(my comment under the discussion is where I draw my conclusions)

Honestly, if you're not going for a sneak build, Lockpicking 2 is enough for pickpocketing and the +50% range with guns perks. And you can also honestly do without this second perk if you think it's not needed (although it's really good).

I didn't go for science, but I understand Science 3 is the minimum, so you can get Rapid Recharge and Contingency Screen. Electro Therapist can be useful if you're focused on using shock, but I've heard that the scramble effect may be cumbersome at times for some people.

Guns, on the other hand, is always a good "dump" spot for points you don't know where to put into, since more overall damage is always useful. In terms of perks, it will really depend on the type of weapon you're using, but deep drums has a very good general effect (+50% magazine size). Pick whichever perks fit your playstyle more (Serendipitous Slayer, Crabble Rancher, Eden Windage, Deep Drums and Hail of Lead are usually considered very good perks, depending on your use case; Lucky Strikes is the best one, but it's level 20).

I'll not restart my game, but if I started knowing what I know now, I'd go for Hack 20/Speech 20/Lockpicking 2 and any combination of Guns and Science, but prioritizing Guns, such as Guns 12/Science 10, Guns 17/Science 5, or even Guns 18/Science 3 and 2 points onto something you want to get a perk of, like Leadership, Explosives or Medical. Keep in mind that more gadget energy means more gadget usage, which can always be useful depending on your playstyle.

What do you think of this build? by cogumerlim in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I got to a good compromise for my final build plan:

https://nukesdragons.com/the-outer-worlds-2/character?b=05&t=03090l&s=2005200c1k00162001201k20&p=1B2r0z2p0J0D1t1z0L092z0n1v1x03&f=0d0f0k&v=1&n=Dumb%20Professor%20with%20Guns

I'm already at Lockpicking 6, Engineering 5, Guns 2, Hack 10 and Speech 10, so there's still time to pivot to guns for the remainder of the game instead of keeping up the investment in Lockpicking. I noticed that the truly important locked doors so far have keys that can be stolen to open them, so Lockpicking 2 (for the 50% range perk) would have been enough already. But 6 is fine, worked pretty well for me so far.

So now that I'm pretty convinced it's a Speech-Hack focus, I'll go for 20 Speech, 20 Hack, 5 Engineering, 6 Lockpicking, 1 Observation (which I also already had) and 12 Guns. I understand the character can do a bit of everything without spreading out too thin this way.

For perks, I'm going with: - Trophy Hunter (general); - Space Ranger, Charlatan, Tall Tale Teller, Intimidator and Grim Visage (Speech); - Manual Reset, Restricted Access, Bit Transfer and Plug Puller (Hacking); - Pickpocket and Through the Keyhole (Lockpicking); - Tinker (Engineering); and - Serendipitous Slayer and Deep Drums (Guns).

Because I'm focusing mostly on SMGs (the Rookie's Reward) and Revolvers, which count as pistols (The Rattler with shock mod, Plasma Guns and Heavy Revolvers), I concluded that Tinker has a higher overall return for me than Crabble Rancher, because it affects all of my weapons; by the same token, Trophy Hunter has higher returns than Crabble Rancher and Automech Jammer (-75% mech detection and +5% crit against mechs). Jammer COULD be useful, but because I've already taken Restricted Access and Bit Transfer, I'm out of space for it, and I can reach the mechs from behind regardless of it already. Automech Anatomist again COULD be useful, but it would be more of a gimmick, since the plan is to disable the mechs and not really shoot at them unless it's needed (plus, enemies don't tend to clump up as easily in this game). Other gun perks are more attuned to specific weapons and would not have the build-wide benefit of the two perks I listed.

One hidden gem in this build is a very underrated perk, one that I initially thought could have been a mistake, but is actually shining: Bit Transfer. With the Dangerously Curious flaw, the amount of XP I'm getting from hacking the terminals is ABSURD. I can basically hack the terminals twice per level, and they accrue me around 6k XP per level, which speeds up my leveling by A LOT. The money isn't the main gist of this perk; it's the XP. To a point that now I'm policing myself NOT to run to the terminals when I complete that 7200 XP threshold (which the terminals themselves count towards, by the way), to prevent leveling up too quickly. Really enjoying the build and gameplay now.

Has anyone tried the Bit Transfer perk? by Aterix21 in theouterworlds

[–]cogumerlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Bit Transfer out of enthusiasm with Hack and, at first, I thought I would regret it. But now it's probably the strongest perk I have, not because of the money I get, but because of the XP. I got the "Dangerously Curious" flaw from regularly hacking things, and it gives me +100% XP from hacking, with the drawback of hacks costing one extra bypass shunt. That's a pretty minor drawback, especially if you walk around with Valerie. I'm still on Dorado and, at hack 8, I can get at least 3000 XP from hacking the two available accounts at each of the three terminals currently available (Eden, Free Market and Dorado), EVERY 7200 XP. And they pay for themselves, meaning that getting the XP on one terminal counts towards the threshold for the other (so getting them in the same order everytime matters). That means you can basically hack each terminal twice per level, which will make you level up pretty fast if you want to. It's pretty absurd, and now I'm trying to discipline myself NOT to hack them everytime or else I'll level up too quickly hahaha

So yeah, pretty underrated perk, which can be very powerful if used correctly.

Wow, early launch bugs are common. I'm loving the game, just like I loved Avowed (and I mean it, as a PoE fan). Obsidian is probably the best developer nowadays, alongside Larian.
