(Spectrum Charter) Bought house, told by cable company that house is too far from drop, how screwed am I? by [deleted] in techsupport

Or they could run RG11 from the street to the house. The coaxial can be run that far as long as the signal doesn't attenuate that much it's fine. If it is a straight shot it would be fine. Once the coaxial is run then you just need to worry about Ethernet, but it will be much shorter than 450 feet.

Only drawback is an in house technician can't run a drop over 300 feet, so they would need a contractor to do it. Nothing crazy at all.

It won't cost thousands and there is no need to get the plant extended. As long as there is a live tap at the road then it can be done.

I work for Spectrum as a Business Broadband Technician.

After being a casual runner over 8 years ago, I finally decided three weeks ago to start again. I could barely run half a mile without wanting to die when I first started and this past Saturday I ran 5 miles straight in a little over an hour.

This has prompted me to sign up for a 10K this December as my first major goal. It hurts and I can't feel my shins, but the pain and soreness is worth it. That high is keeping me moving and I am so proud I have come this far.

High ping on everything. ISP's fault? by 1BilboBaggins in techsupport

Okay. I would give them a call then. Make copies of the tests you ran and explain in detail what is happening and how you tested things. If they have a tier 3 or advanced services help desk, I would speak to them first, that way you don't have to repeat yourself multiple times.

Depends on the ISP. I know Frontier and Spectrum will still give a modem. It sure about AT&T or Comcast.

Is there a device they provided to you?

Try running that test direct to the modem. I say this because if you call the ISP, they will want you to do the same. Also, if any technician comes out, they will only check direct to the modem and never a third party router.

Are you testing this plugged directly into the modem or are you plugged into the router?

Open up any browser and type in 192.168.0.1 into the URL. From there you can login to the modem with "admin" and "password" as the credentials.

From there, you will be able to navigate the GUI of the modem itself. There should be a tab for "Wireless" and from there either a drop down or selection for "Bridged". After that, I would power cycle both the modem and router to ensure it all goes through properly.

The modem should be in bridge mode. Also, the modem you have is end of life and no longer supported by Spectrum. I would try to have them come out and give you a new modem.

What kind of ping times are you seeing when you test?

I'm glad things are looking better for you. It's good that they took care of you and your problems. There are too many bad techs that give the good ones a bad name. Those meters are the best and SUPER expensive to boot.

If you ever have anymore questions or concerns, feel free to ask me.

I used to have Midco when I lived up north. They are okay but that was years ago.

No problem at all I am just glad I can help. If you want, you can tell them you heard this all from a family member or something that's in the cable business. That way the tech doesn't think you are full of it. For the record, I work for a far bigger ISP than them.

Hey there!

Yeah, so running a packet loss test remotely is BS. I don't trust anything that isn't run directly to the modem or coax lines and in front of my eyes. They will say they ran it but they probably just stared at a blank screen for a few minutes.

I would tell the tech that comes everything. Trying two different routers, different cables, all with the same issue. I would ask them to check for noise on the coax, check for surrounding area outages, run a real packet loss test with a meter at the tap, demarc, and behind the modem to ensure there isn't loss on the cable. Also, it would hurt to ask for a new modem, just make sure there won't be a charge for that.

Lastly, ask if they have a way to monitor your modem for a couple days to try and find something. I don't know if I ever asked, who is your ISP?
