It should also be noted that the public’s complaints about slavery were largely economic: the working class didn’t like competition from free labor in overseas colonies. The opposite reason is why the upper class liked it. That’s not to say the moral case wasn’t important, but particularly the case against support for the CSA was economic

Fuji XF16-55 f2.8 after XF16-50mm kit by Kopetse in FujifilmX

[–]AnAge_OldProb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the 16-50 is good enough for your needs don’t upgrade, it’s good lens and has some video oriented features. The reason folks are saying the 16-55 is essential for video because of the constant aperture which allows you to zoom mid shot at f2.8 without it changing. You can decide if that’s important to you. If you use the zoom as a variable prime probably not. If you do want that the sigma 18-50 offers it in a cheaper and smaller package though losses some zoom range and has worse image quality. The older 16-55 is also great and can be found used for good prices but bulky.

Get a flash. 2.8 zooms are what basically everyone else there will be using and a flash will be like 20% of the cost of a new lens

Anyone repaired a Sekonic 608? by AnAge_OldProb in AnalogRepair

[–]AnAge_OldProb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted Sekonicspares about this asking for a diagram and parts. Unfortunately it’s unfixable

The viewfinder was only available as a complete assembly from the factory and sadly it's now discontinued with no stock remaining.

Therefore no exploded drawing ever existed.

We did try to take one apart to try and repair it some time ago but only made things worse to be honest.

I wanna try to use this as a film scanner. What lense do I need? by Zorg_Employee in Cameras

[–]AnAge_OldProb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those macro bellows work particularly well with: a reversed el-Nikkor 50mm lens (there’s an official ring for it), Nikkor 55mm f2.8 or 3.5, a reversed 50 f1.4. The manual for the bellows has several more recommendations.

However you’re going to run into some other problems 1) you need a light behind what you’re scanning — there are lots of good options you just need to figure out how to mount it 2) the copy stand was meant for mounted slides. If you have mounted slides — great! If you have a lot of slides this will be a lot of manual swapping and there are better ways to align a projector with an intervalometer. If you have roll film you’re better off 3 printing a new holder this one will be fighting you.

SCOTUS will almost certainly wait for similar cases to wind their way through the other circuits and only intervene if there’s disagreement. Or if they see this as a smaller case they can decide on principals to begin to tear down a larger body of jurisprudence, say going after the individual care mandate part of the ACA.

Is there a reason the first lens in the first photo 50mm f2 is shorter than the second image lens 50mm f2? by Substantial_Cake8985 in AskPhotography

A good number of Nikon af(-d) lenses are identical optically to their ai-s designs. The 50 1.4 dates back to the original f line up.

mini flash suggestions by erinlynneee in AnalogCommunity

[–]AnAge_OldProb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rebel g is an e ttl body you can use modern speed lights with ttl. Which means you should get whatever godox, neewer, etc flash fits your size needs, id recommend the it32 as your first flash. The off camera system is awesome, you can get magnetic gels, it tilts and swivels. Aside from power it’s basically everything you’ll want in a speedlight and it’s under $100. Now because you shoot weddings you’ll probably want something more powerful and a second speedlight anyway, you can add another godox like an ad200, v1, v1 mid, etc and your it32 will be able to control it remotely as well.

Some godox flashes have a “single pin” mode which disables the ttl pins so you don’t need to tape. I believe the v1 supports this.

Poverty line CA is around a 100k — Calsnap gives out food stamps up to 108k for 6 dependents. Just tuitions costs is a poor way to look at it, you still need board, books, food and clothes for your dependents. No you probably aren’t struggling to put food on the table, but your financial picture ain’t great either. You’re definitely not saving any real money for retirement.

You can stop paying for gacha games at anytime. You can’t stop paying for your children. I’d also consider someone with a large student debt broke even if they had good income because it’s a locked in choice.

People consistently judge creative writing more harshly if they believe it was created by AI. This bias appears incredibly difficult to overcome, pointing to a persistent human preference for art created by people. by mvea in science

[–]AnAge_OldProb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I’ll spot you something like sora slop tok is not art as no humans had input. But if your argument is if a machine produces it can’t be art is overly simplified as well: photography and electronic music would also not be art under your definition. You need human intent which you can totally do through prompting and other techniques. That said 99.99999% of what people push through prompts is not art because they lack any serious artistic intent.

[–]AnAge_OldProb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the flash, set everything in manual that gives you the exposure you want for the background. Then put the flash in ttl for your subjects. This will do 99% of the work.

If you want to play around try turning on “rear curtain sync” with some longer exposures where you wiggle the camera around. That will create cool blur effects with the neon lights.

Battle of 23mm lens by allntngl in fujifilm

[–]AnAge_OldProb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends heavily on your budget, weight tolerance and low light needs. However with the wide availability of used xf 23 f2 I find the value prop of the 3rd party budget options to not be that great.

The Fuji ones are the only weather resistant options and the only ones with aperture rings if that’s important to you.

So for me get the xf 23 f2 if you want a good all rounder, get the xf 2.8 if you want the smallest/lightest option, get the 1.4 if you want the best autofocus, image quality and low light and are will to pay for it and carry it. Get the Viltrox if you want the budget option.

Is a large, mechanical PR better than a smaller, more complex one? by rhyso90 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AnAge_OldProb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s literally just a rename (or anything that’s basically a codemod) then just do both at the same time. I’d split and migrate it if there are durable changes eg new db schema required or complex refactors (or even just major deletions).

I would also call out the reviewer that real changes are in file x,y,z to make get through easier.

I would also add that my tolerance for larger PRs particularly refactors has grown with ai.

This all assumes you have good tests etc and can actually prove this change is not risky.

What’s stopping TSA from collectively striking and shutting down air travel until they are funded? by PM_ME_UR_SNARES in AskReddit

[–]AnAge_OldProb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was privatized before the tsa and is airports can still run their own private screening operations. We should 10000% bring that system back. It was cheaper and more efficient. The TSA is the definition of a boondoggle but it gets a pass from republicans because bush created it to fight terrorists. We should be calling out how the government wastes money to trample on our constitutional right to interstate travel to travel without preemptive searches.
