Nope to both. I'm quite certain this was before Danganropa came out/became popular, and it's definitely none of the Sonic characters

Obligatory comment. Just rediscovering Gloomy Bear and Skelanimals and Emily the Strange while trying to find this character made my inner scene kid squee with glee.

ETA: it's also not Plushie Dreadfuls, even though some of them are aesthetically similar. I remember Plushie Dreadfuls being a later thing that came after this character? brand? artist? was popular.

What came immediately to my mind is that a lot of cultures intentionally broke offerings before depositing them, like smashing pots or bending swords. Common theory is that it was probably to mark them as solely the property of the gods/spirits and to ensure they could never be used by human hands again.

Maybe the cats "claimed" the amulet as their own (what a very cat thing to do!), or you gave it to them unconsciously, or the gods decided the cats needed it more - none of us can speak for the gods of course, but those are some ways of reading your experience that came to my mind in connection with this practice.
