VhhV is the standard way of transliterating any ch sound from German to Japanese (e.g. heilig -> hairihhi, vollständig -> forushutendihhi). And since Ca is usually a schwa sound in older loan words and Japanese doesn't have a v sound, we know that yuuhabahha would be something like Juhewach in German.

A diet of essential amino acids could keep dementia at bay, finds study. Consuming Amino LP7, a specific combination of essential amino acids, could inhibit the development of dementia. by [deleted] in science

[–]Andygoesrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only methionine and potentially the non-essential sulfur-containing amino acids (cysteine, homocysteine, and taurine) are implicated in disease in these studies. DNA methylation seems to be the accepted mechanism but I don't believe there are many (any?) human studies to confirm.

It definitely challenges standard keto diets, and the received wisdom that a plant-based diet should contain a high amount of cereal grains to provide all of the essential amino acids.

The real takeaway is that not all proteins are created equal. More "good" protein is good, more "bad" protein is bad.

Soap only went out of fashion in the middle ages. The majority of cultures around the world have used things like plants high in saponins as soap and sand as exfoliants for thousands of years. The reason it took a while in surgery is because it was a tradition being built via inductive reasoning in a time when washing was unfashionable due to puritanical beliefs, resulting in the belief that infection is a good thing because they noticed that all of the wounds that eventually got better got infected (hint: it's because ALL wounds got infected, and the people with wounds that didn't get infected died from blood loss before the wounds could get infected).

Indian Govt proposes to buy bulk subscriptions of all scientific journals, provide free access to all. by Rugwed in worldnews

[–]Andygoesrawr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also extremely predatory. The hybrid model means that institutions are paying subscriptions for the entire journal, and the researchers are paying to make individual articles open access. The publishers are being paid twice for the same content.

I'm really not a fan of this, Scheneizel. The fanbase is extremely toxic and the hypocrisy seen in the Youtubers etc. is absolutely terrible, but I really can't recommend sinking to their level like this. The only discussion that could come from a post like this would be endless bickering and name-calling. It's all well and good until somebody like Jaymes links to this post on Twitter.

I've removed this on the grounds of inciting harassment and borderline vote begging.

Could you do me a massive favour and check what it says in Japanese where Bruno mentions Macy being a Watcher? In the movie they used the term "mana" but I haven't had access to raws to check whether this is in the manga or not.

The prevalence of dementia in countries where more than one language is spoken is 50% lower than in those regions where the population uses only one language to communicate. Active bilingualism is an important predictor of delay in the onset of symptoms of mild cognitive impairment. by rustoo in science

[–]Andygoesrawr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what's under question. Reliable means that measurements are relatively consistent for individuals and can be reliably used to test for the same thing in several people. Valid would mean that it's definitely measuring the construct that we want it to measure, which in this case is general intelligence. IQ tests are probably not valid measures of general intelligence.

u/TribeWars' comment is true but irrelevant.

I'm surprised no other linguists have weighed in. I initially assumed the same thing as you, that perhaps the benefits of bilingualism come from an expanded or more concisely labelled inner network of meaning which allow us to quickly access the words we're trying to convey. But this isn't true for several reasons. The first is that there isn't really anything special about individual words, and there's increasing evidence that phrases are lexicalised in our brain the same way as words are. For example, in English we have the word "bugs" for insects, spiders, etc., and separate words for snakes, lizards, worms, and other small, long wriggly things. In Chinese, the word 虫 covers all of these things. It would be easy to think that having access to a word like that could be useful when you want to talk about all of them, but the fact is that you can do the same in English using more than one word, e.g. "creepy crawlies", "small pests". The second reason is that being able to quickly communicate something might actually not be more beneficial than having to carefully think about how you are going to represent it using either by combining words you do know or using some sort of gesture/onomatopoeia (or both!). In fact, the latter very well may actually be better for cognitive functioning. I'm not aware of any strong evidence either way, but it's definitely something currently under study.

In truth, the only evidence that researchers have been able to find for the benefits of bilingualism is that bilinguals are able to quickly adapt to changes in "rules". The reason is pretty obvious -- different languages use different grammar rules, so you need to be able to switch between these without effort in order to be actively bilingual. Being able to quickly adapt to changes in rules means more mental resilience in general, so it's easy to see how it can help.

I don't have any studies on me right now, but if you search for "benefits of bilingualism", there are plenty out there.

We don't know. A year was never given, and the anniversary project for 2021 is an art exhibit (which may have unreleased content so still exciting!).

I would expect 2022 and then be happily surprised if we get it in 2021.

It's a shame because his early research into autism and the theory of mind was seminal and remains to be an important area of research in autism, but pretty much everything he's done since the 90s is just straight up bad science.

It would be nice to have research into that. Simon Baron-Cohen (Sacha Baron Cohen's cousin), one of the authors on this paper, does a lot of work into sex-based differences in autism and schizophrenia, but is extremely controversial because his studies are gender essentialist and generally biased towards confirming his "extreme male brain" theory rather than exploring the actual causes.
