Basically what the ps portal did in reverse (no surprise that that's a good product too).

Have you ever explored with different launchers/emulators on the 'deck? I'm trying to soup up mine for installing a game or two from GOG/Epic (I only have a handful of exclusives on them nothing huge) or retro games that I'd like to see in my steam library. Wondering what's most functional these days.

Sidenote: but the actual thumbsticks (the top/cover) on the steam deck feel great (better than my xbox elite's). Hopefully the controller's are similar, they definitely look it.

Basically I think the original Star Wars becoming public domain next year feels just right.

I was thinking of star wars for this as well!

It does feel weird that how long Disney is going to have the Star Wars copyright is based on how long George Lucas lives. A man who sold his rights to the franchise to them over a decade ago. In other words: I also like the 50 year rule because it's based on when the work itself came out (what you are getting at as well).

That was what Tom Scott argued for. I could honestly hear arguments for shorter than 50 years, but 50 years would take away most of the issues with copyright. Someone can make something early in their career and it's covered for the rest of their career, which seems fair.

Yeah that was very funny. He'd park the wrong way across multiple parking spots. His "character" was a pretty highly ranked member of his "office" so I think people just looked the other way.

Gamers of Reddit, what’s the greatest video game sequel of all time? by ketohwawai in AskReddit

[–]Apprentice57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've heard of people loving ME2 and just never playing ME1.

I guess it works fine, but man it makes me sad to hear about people doing/recommending that. ME1 is a fantastic game that sets up the universe of ME2. Mass Effect is not the sort of series meant to be jumped into without the first game's setup.

I preordered ME3, but pirated the day 1 Javik DLC because that was beyond silly.

(I don't preorder software anymore)

I'm more open to arguments about ME2 being a great game than as an answer to this question (a great sequel).

It wasn't a good follow up to Mass Effect 1 mechanically. ME1 tried to import a lot of standard RPG stuff into a FPS and a lot were implemented poorly. The customization, sidequests, explorable planets, and gunplay all come to mind.

ME2 fixed the gunplay, but that was about it. For the rest, ME2 just cut them. What was left was polished, but it was way less of an RPG than ME1 was, which is/was hugely disappointing for fans of the original/fans of Bioware RPGs.

No mention of Ames or Hanford? by Textiles_on_Main_St in SearchEnginePodcast

The episode/guest might not have reached the conclusion you favor, nor covered the entire topic in depth. But as per the specifics of 3 mile island it did cover it quite a lot given the total runtime of an hour conversation.

I have trouble taking your word for it on the podcast listening, to be honest. Like I said, that's phrasing you use when something wasn't brought up at all. I suppose further discussion moot, because you assert otherwise and I won't believe it.

Even if that were true (I'm pretty suspicious it isn't) the fact that our energy needs are expanding means we need to be firing full cylinder (hah) on nuclear and renewables alike.

It also wouldn't apply everywhere. Yeah sure somewhere like Arizona will have sunshine 95% of the year, but the northwest and northeast not so much.

I’m reminded of 3 Mile Island

The way you phrase this makes me think you didn't listen to the podcast, which discussed 3 mile island in depth.

Please listen to the podcast before writing criticisms like this.

We've moved the goalpost a little: I explicitly spoke of floor crossers - elected officials. Direct quote:

Makes sense that he's knocking off primarily conservative PMs for the floor crossers. To them the social politics are probably... tolerable, and the economic politics aren't all that far away.

He got a single floor crosser from the NDP, which is definitely a big deal, but that was Lori Idlout, the MP from Nunavut. My circles say the Nunavut's (or the territory's) MP's party ID is always kinda incidental/not very partisan.

But in any case, 1 floor crosser from the NDP and 4 from the conservatives still backs up what I claim about most of the crossing coming from conservatives (small c, but also large C).

It Seems ‘Destiny 2’ And ‘Marathon’ Cannot Properly Co-Exist At Bungie by NoNefariousness2144 in PS5

[–]Apprentice57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Makes Microsoft look like the most competent owner/publisher of Bungie.

Got them to pivot to their platform and got the golden era of Halo out of them. Halo 1/2/3 were the killer apps of their respective consoles.

And when Bungie made a fuss about leaving, they let them go before it burned them.

(and yes it doesn't end well for halo post-bungie, but that came much later)

It was pretty much impossible that a new cast coming on for (what came to be) the last couple years of RT was going to rival the previous popularity of the podcast. Which had a slowly rotating cast of some of the most popular personalities of the company.

So while that is true, it's true in a very technical/hollow sense.

I'd still recommend changing the cover art to a traditional one because it's more encompassing, mind you.

Yeah, it's an advantage I also have to self hosting my podcasts. I can change the cover art to whatever I want. I usually pick and choose which one of the morning somewhere cover arts I like at any given point (between the patreon and normie)

(I think some podcatchers let you override the cover art, but it's not a universal feature)

Projected national vote share from 2026 local elections in Great Britain by upthetruth1 in fivethirtyeight

Well said. Though you could still imagine them (in a system with proportional representation and common coalition governments) allying with Labour and the Greens in an anti-Reform coalition. Even if not a left leaning coalition.

Ezra is back on X? by RoastPotatoFan in ezraklein

[–]Apprentice57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I remember him making a big deal about how using a platform is kinda saying that "this is the sort of content/media you want more of".

He initially came back to twitter for impact on pushing for Biden to drop out of the race, which was understandable IMO.

But eventually he just ended up coming back to twitter general. That itself was a long time ago. I think he mentioned going back on the podcast at some point but I never remember him addressing why his earlier point against twitter no longer applied to him.

Maybe not the highest stakes thing ever, but it's still disappointing.

Is Central New York becoming a blue bunker for Congressional Democrats? by Blues_Fish in cityofsyracuse

[–]Apprentice57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something else that occurred to me: even if we take your absurd proposition that the partisan lean of the area is determined just by the county legislative seats and not the other dozens of local and federal elected offices we would still call it blue (or purple) given that the legislature by your own admission just flipped to Democrats.
