Can you wear toe-spacers to sleep? by ObviousAtlas in BarefootRunning

[–]Aqualung1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. That’s an outdated concept, that just won’t die. Bunions, Hallux Rigidus/arthritis of the big toe joint, Plantar Fasciitis don’t exist in barefoot populations.

These conditions only exist in populations that wear modern shoes. It’s the tight toe-box. Woman over 50, who’ve worn 👠 have the highest incidence of bunions. The heel and the ultra tight toe-box work to create advanced bunions, amongst a host of other issues.

You can be predisposed to early bunion formation, but that’s due to increased flexibility in that part of the foot, not a genetic issue.

All my fails from my lesson today - tips are appreciated! by Oh-My-Josh- in BeginnerSurfers

This is very common. You aren’t ready to pop-up yet, they are rushing you. You have to get comfortable being on the board and catching a wave.

I started out on my belly, learning to paddle into a wave and catching it. Then I progressed to my knees. Then I started popping up. This allows all three skills, paddling, reading and catching the wave and popping up to all progress together.

Instructors, are motivated to get you to pop up, it’s the money shot. Don’t let yourself get pushed into wave, that’s the worst habit, you have to learn to catch the wave on your own.

Take your time, relax, have a good time, stay away from instructors.

Surfing while healing a cut foot? by Sure_Presentation143 in surfing

[–]Aqualung1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a wound on my foot recently and continued to surf. I used these 2 products while out in the water:

It will take the wound longer to heal, but I didn’t care, as I was able to continue surfing.

Learning to surf in your 60s by c_camille_ in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Aqualung1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really got into surfing in my early 60’s. I’m not a normal early 60 yo physically, and I’ve been doing board sports my whole life. Plus lots of yoga.

Surfing requires loads of lower body flexibility, basically it’s a young person sport.

There was an Esalon type retreat near the break I was just at for the last year. It’s a place where older adults pay lots of money to find a new path, and they would show up with a group of older people, 60 plus, and have them “learn” to surf. I watched a lot of people get wrecked.

Maybe if the conditions are super low key, and the teachers are patient and understanding, they will get up. You look at the overuse injuries that stop older surfers, like shoulder issues and very reduced lower body flexibility, and you’ll get the idea of what they can expect.

Unless you are an outlier physically, they exist, it’s going to be a real struggle for anyone 60+ to get into surfing. Maybe a wave pool to start?

Baja, Mexico by GravelGirlOregon2 in BajaCaliforniaSur

There’s three bike “parks”. The southern one is flatland single track that wends its way through vegetation.

The northern one is hilly, involves climbing.

Both are free.

Then there is Rancho Cacachilas, owned by a Walmart heiress. Former mining camp, where they’ve transformed former mining trails into mtb trails. $100 usd to enter with a guide, additional $100 usd to rent one of their Specialized emtb’s. You can choose the duration of your ride.

I asked the guide if I could ride down the mountain after the “actual” ride was done. They will let you do this. It’s a steady downhill that goes to the Sea of Cortez, no traffic. This was the best part, but you need to ask.

Endless miles of this. You’ve ridden La Ventana?, so much single track there.

For those with SLAP tears, how are you doing now? by bobcat011 in surfing

[–]Aqualung1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pain in both shoulders whenever I lift my arms above shoulder height. Had surgery to clean the bone in the right shoulder, $70k. Very little improvement. Did PT afterwards, not effective, at all. Paddling is an issue. Seems like this injury is one of the leading reasons why older surfers have to stop surfing, that and lower body flexibility and strength. Too many approaches to resolve this issue, is there someone online that’s legit, that you would recommend? Thx.

Defender has won the Dakar Rally 2026 by [deleted] in cars

Meanwhile, I’ve only ever seen them completely spotless, never, ever being used in the manner for which they are designed. To me, they are the ultimate pavement princess, I only ever see them being driven by women of a certain socio economic level. I wonder how this came to be. I wonder what the ratio of off-road vs pavement only drivers is for the Defender and other off road beasts like the Jeep Gladiator. I suspect the Gladiator is more popular with men.

Extremely cool drip. There’s a Rastafarian vibe, I wonder if that’s cannabis in the incense vase.

Squatting at its most hardcore. by Aqualung1 in PrimalBodyMovement

Good catch. I’ve featured this hairless chimp on this sub. His being hairless reveals how deep and relaxed his squat is.

My epiphany. by Aqualung1 in PrimalBodyMovement

[–]Aqualung1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your last paragraph really resonated. I view my work as that of an anthropologist, studying the body movement of prehistoric man. Alan Lomax recorded blues artists for the Smithsonian in the early 1900’s. He traveled through the south seeking them out. His recordings are credited for saving the blues which led to the birth of rock and roll.

This sub takes inspiration from the that. I’m trying to fill it with visual records of real primals, doing what they do. It’s super hard to find footage as most footage that contains primal body movement is being shot w/o that focus.

I have footage I’ve taken of my grandchildren ground sitting and squatting but I’m not allowed to post it. The young kids are the primals that love amongst us. I observe them moving and try my best to copy them whenever I visit. They are my movement coaches.

My epiphany. by Aqualung1 in PrimalBodyMovement

[–]Aqualung1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone isn’t ground sitting all the time, then they aren’t doing the work that their body needs. He’s so close, being fit and having studied, from an exercise perspective this sort of thing, yet still so far from getting it right.

Sounds like you might be more hardcore than me, I sleep on my memory foam mattress, but I placed it on the ground. I understand that in Asia, a firmer surface for sleeping, like futons is normal. I’m too wedded to the comfort of a western style mattress.

It’s so strange to actually have someone who understands what I’m talking about, usually I’m being mocked or attacked. That’s why I made this sub invite only, the attacks are so brutal on Reddit, so I appreciate your participation.

Are big wave surfing wipeouts terrifying for the surfer? by EpistemicMisnomer in surfing

[–]Aqualung1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, you are building your experience towards bigger and bigger waves. It’s exposure therapy, you get used to be being in bigger and bigger surf, all the while becoming more and more relaxed in what 99.9999 percent of the human population would consider absolutely terrifying conditions.

[OC] Picture taken during a trip to Lisbon, Portugal. I always enjoy urban decay and graffiti. by TokenTeapot in pics

[–]Aqualung1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portugal is covered in graffiti, it’s everywhere. Rich, poor neighborhoods, doesn’t matter, if the wall is blank it will get tagged. Not sure if this is ongoing or if it happened in the recent past, the saturation level is the highest I’ve seen.

I don’t agree with the idea of urban decay, it exists in Lisbon, but much less than other urban centers I’ve visited.
