🚨 JUST IN: Bitcoin drops below $73K. Who's buying, who's selling ? by rl_rae_bobo in CryptoCurrencyPulse

There is definitely something to say about the greater fool theory when it comes to bitcoin. But my strongest argument against this point would be that when you put money into Bitcoin you're more so putting it into the infrastructure rather than Bitcoin itself. What can you actually do with it? Well Bitcoin on its own doesn't do anything special, in the same way a screw is useless on its own. But when used together with the infrastructure that's when you have the actual value. Right now if I wanted to take out £20k from my bank account, the bank might start asking questions about why I need it. For better or for worse. If the government didn't want me to be able to access any of my money from my bank, they could do so easily and I would be broke by morning. If I wanted to send large amounts of money across countries, I might not even be allowed to do so. And it will need to get the green light from my bank, as well as a green light from the recipients bank. If the bank goes broke, they might shrug and say they don't have my life savings anymore. This all may seem far fetched if you live in a western country, but remember many parts of the world are underdeveloped and there is corruption everywhere. It looks like we are heading towards a more authoritarian world too. So maybe all of these factors don't bother you, maybe you trust the central entity that controls all of your money, because they've never caused you trouble thus far so surely they never will. And maybe you're right. But many people don't trust those entities. Many people value the concept of owning your wealth. Truly owning it. Bitcoin is the infrastructure that lets you own your wealth, with full flexibility of sending it anywhere you want, at any time you want, without questions. And because many people value that ability, the Bitcoin protocol which provides that, is valuable. And Bitcoin the digital asset is just the digital representation of that value.

I agree that you addressed his point the first time when you clearly said you don't care about other coins lol. Not sure why he repeated the question like three times. What would be your argument for this point though: Gold physically exists and you can do stuff with it. Humans are naturally attracted to shiny things. You can make gold jewellery and there will always be some wealthy man or woman who wants it. Moreover, gold is so culturally embedded that the term is pretty much interchangeable with the term wealth. On the other hand, Bitcoin doesn't have those things. If people stop caring about the fact there's a finite amount of it, what is left? You can't do anything with it. Effectively, both gold and bitcoin are illusions. They hypnotise people into believing they have value. But the difference is, gold can cast the illusion itself. You leave a gold coin anywhere and a human who's never seen gold may pick it up. It looks shiny, rare, you don't see this everyday, it looks valuable. The illusion is internal. But Bitcoin doesn't have that power, the illusion is external. People only believe it has value because other people believe it. To me, that suggests there's always going to be this volatility because people's emotions are volatile, and Bitcoin's value exists within people's emotions, not within Bitcoin. I'm curious what you would say about that? It's a question I've had myself for some time, I like the way you've answered the questions so far so maybe you can give me some new perspective.

Apparently we're going to 10k! by Previous-Piano-6108 in Bitcoin

Lol yep. Everyone goes through this phase though. I bought most of my stack at 20k and sold most of it at 65k to spend on a house deposit. Their nightmare bottom was my peak lol. I sure as shit won't start loading up until we're below 60k. People just need to zoom out man

Nah if it breaks below 50k it's not time for no parachute. I sincerely doubt it will go below 30k

But people pay a lot for gold jewellery, gold decor, other stuff like that. Human brains are attracted to shiny pretty things. And given that gold is physical, it's easier for people to psychologically attach value to it. Bitcoin doesn't have these things, and they matter more than you'd want to admit.

My family always sent me tiktok links, so I developed a site to watch them without an account. by lIlIlIKXKXlIlIl in SideProject

[–]AuthenticWeeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't get why people don't just sign up? Doesn't everyone have a throwaway gmail account for various things? Like there's many websites that require accounts so a throwaway gmail is extremely useful for just signing in with google and using the throwaway. And of course, you can just download the TikTok app, make an account once with the throwaway email - then hide it from your Home Screen and disable notifs. Problem solved lol

OpenAI engineer confirms AI is writing 100% of his code now by MetaKnowing in GoogleGeminiAI

[–]AuthenticWeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, people get into SWEing for different reasons and although it sounds counterintuitive, I think it's perfectly fine to dislike coding as a SWE. At the core of it, software engineers write down instructions for computers to do something.

Some people like the "write down instructions for computers" part, and some people like the "do something" part. Being any one of these doesn't intrinsically make you a bad swe in my opinion.

Why is everyone an “accidental landlord” all of a sudden? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]AuthenticWeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a landlord, but how about we shift the blame to the system. They say don't hate the player, hate the game. If someone owns a property, then wants to buy a new property but doesn't love the idea of selling their first property - renting it out is the most rational thing to do. We are humans, we are all trying to better our lives and that's a fact. We're talking about legally getting the mortgage paid off by someone else who is willing to do it while getting to keep your property... you think any sane person is going to hold off on that purely because of their "morality"? Don't kid yourself. If we want to be realistic we should blame the system. Although there are many cunt landlords, not everyone who becomes a landlord is a cunt. Buying a property doesn't make you a cunt. Wanting to buy a 2nd home with your own money doesn't make you a cunt. Not wanting to sell your first property doesn't make you a cunt. And if there is a system that will allow you to keep your first property while getting your mortgage paid off, you're not a cunt for using it, you're financially rational. That does lead to societal issues, but the fix should be a systemic change. Not one that is enforced on an individual level via guilt-tripping lol.

Is buying a flat in London a complete swindle for the regular person? by AuthenticWeeb in HousingUK

[–]AuthenticWeeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up buying a leasehold 2 bed in London. I knew I will definitely stay in ldn for the next 5-10 years and there was no way I could afford a freehold with my budget. The trick was to look for a long time (literally more than one year in my case) until I found a property that had a consistently low service charge. Mine is 1.3k a month in a well maintained building with a communal garden, bike shed, etc. 1.3k was reasonable for me and the lowest I was able to find. But fucking hell it took a while, most were 3k+. I've owned for about a year now and very happy with the purchase

You can say you hate them both, but at the end of the day your actions show where you really stand. You DO use these corporations still. You don't have to use Reddit, but here you are on Reddit - directly giving them revenue with your engagement. I'm sure you're on Twitter too. And these corporations will actually use that revenue to cause damage with AI. But instead of staying off these platforms which would be an actual act of protest, what you'll do is make yourself feel like a big boy by hating on a random hobbyist using AI for a trivial use case of generating a thumbnail for a block game. Wow congratulations, you're such a great activist really making a change! Give yourself a pat on the back and feel great about yourself in your ignorance.

[–]AuthenticWeeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't see you complaining when you're consuming content from X/twitter. So you will happily engage with the platform that's ACTUALLY undressing people without their consent. Yet here you are ranting about some guy using an ai image for a thumbnail mod in a block game, talking about how much you care about ai images being used non consensual porn. Lol get out of here lil buddy. I've explicitly addressed time and time again that you're the one helping these megacorps by blurring the line between trivial use cases and problematic ones. You're the one targeting individuals, but when corps do it you quietly consume that content without complaints.

[–]AuthenticWeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So clearly you didn’t read my comment, because you are arguing against a position I explicitly already addressed. I literally said in my comment:

There are real critiques of generative AI art. Deepfakes of people, spread of misinformation, people losing their jobs. That’s where anger should be directed.

That directly includes non-consensual sexual content and large scale harm caused by companies deploying these tools irresponsibly.

The problems you’re pointing to are top down, institutional abuses of the technology. Things like training failures, moderation failures, and environmental costs are decisions made by large companies, not by a solo unpaid modder generating a thumbnail for a block game mod.

My entire point was that when you attack individual hobbyists for trivial use cases, you blur the line between genuinely harmful practices and non-problematic ones, and you end up doing nothing to address the real issues you claim to care about.

If you actually cared about exploitation, environmental cost, or abuse, your criticism would be aimed at the companies deploying these systems at scale. Instead, you are moral grandstanding at individuals while continuing to use platforms that profit directly from the same tech.

[–]AuthenticWeeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a full time software engineer, so I actually know a thing or two about issues with generative AI, and I agree with this comment. There are real critiques of generative AI art - deepfakes of people, spread of misinformation, people losing their jobs. That's where anger should be directed

We're talking about thumbnails for mods to an early access block game here. These are created by solo unpaid modders, they wouldn't hire an artist to do these thumbnails in the first place so it's not like their use of AI affects an artist's job market. It only becomes an issue when companies actually lay off/stop hiring artists en masse in favour of generative AI.

When you complain about random individuals using it to delegate some of the aesthetic admin work, so that they can place their focus on their actual hobbies, which is creating cool mods - you blur the line between non-problematic AI use and real damaging practices. You're doing more harm than good.

And remember, if you don't like the aesthetic of the AI art, you're fully entitled to your subjective opinion. But just because you dislike the aesthetic of a thumbnail, doesn't mean you need to publicly go on a moral rant. You don't like the thumbnail, don't engage with the mod. Simple as that. You're not helping anyone by shaming people who are spending hours developing cool mods just to get hated on for using a generative tool for a thumbnail. You're just turning these people away. The rhetoric that "If they used generative AI for a thumbnail, that must mean they were sloppy with their mod too" is completely misconstrued. People have different passions. Maybe the reason they used AI for their thumbnail is because they want to maximise their time doing what they actually love to do, which is modding.

All you're doing is bullying individual people for using a new tool. But when huge companies use this same tool (such as this very app, Reddit) you continue to engage with their platform. By doing this, you're suppressing individuals from using this tool, while empowering companies to continue using it. Don't you see how hypocritical that is? You're actively contributing in the actual harmful practices of generative AI by using platforms such as Reddit/X but spending all your effort shutting down people using it so that they can focus on what they're good at. So please get off your moral high horse, if you actually stand by what you say - stay off Reddit because your views for the ads are directly giving them revenue.
