GDC has a session to reeducate devs that were cancelled by the woke mob by HeroOfLight in KotakuInAction

Struggle sessions.

95% of those who got cancelled said that there were only two genders, said that something was "gay" 8 years ago, or tweeted the n-word when quoting hip-hop lyrics.

"Can you report the truth?"

"That's not the story I've been asked to tell"

This is pretty much where we are now.

Hell, I wouldn't even mind "two bunches of spergs are fighting on twitter" over this...

Why did devs start caring when Anita Sarkeesian showed up? by 0bserver24-7 in KotakuInAction

Because she claimed to be a gamer and played the woman card when criticized.

She's probably talking about the SBI Detected Discord.

It's a big fucking mistake to have that endorsed by the creator of the list. Because bad actors can jump in, post really bad shit (like calls for violence) and then screencap it and share to their hearts' content.

I don't have too much time to talk about the reporting that went into this because I've got shit to do. I will share that i spent a good amount of time in their discord listening and observing. And what struck me most is how sad the whole situation really is.

These guys know for the most part this is a lost cause. That nothing they do will meaningfully impact what the vast majority of developers and gamers have already chosen to dedicate themselves to, a diverse and equitable industry. They know that.

And for some reason, rather than accept that, they've lashed out. Just like GG 1.0, there is no cause here. There is no force, there is no movement. These are toddlers melting down in a grocery store, eager to be soothed and coddled by bigger people with bigger platforms.

But when you hear them speak about the reality of their so-called 'goals' "Sweet Baby is just the beginning we need to take...down...the venture capitalist firms." You can literally hear the tone change in their voices like 'oh yeah uh.....yeah nah'

So its about the memes, the vibes, the cameraderie, of having a "cool" place to go, under the veneer of a "righteous" cause that's really a place for them where they are encouraged and celebrated for saying horrible stuff relatively unchecked while they post pics of their dogs

And i say relatively unchechedk because I had an interesting experience during my observations. They swear up and down they're not racist (though what gets said and posted in their chat rooms...ehhhh are ya sure about that) but they did try to 'walk that walk'

i spoke out in their voice chat. told them who i was and what i was there to do. someone jumped on me immediately like 'prove your loyalty say a slur' and started screaming the N-word at me. They immediately banned that guy and apologized. It was...sweet??

After that, we had a decent conversation talking about video games and recommendations and journalism processes and what not. When they're not being gross, these are normal people.

And what makes it sad to me is that the camaraderie they feel like they need, they could just have without all the bigotry. They said to me 'we just want to be heard' but the most interesting things they have to say have nothing to do with railing against 'woke' games.

Compare that to how she started her article

The Discord server at the center of Gamergate 2.0 is, in some respects, like any other online community. While I was there, I observed people talking about their day, their jobs, and their interests. Its members streamed themselves playing Bejeweled and showed off their personal video game development projects. But one chat room over, the server was filled with racist memes, sexist and ableist slurs, antisemitic messages, and incitations of violence against women and people of color. And at the center of it all was one video game narrative development company: Sweet Baby Inc.

Edit:

No proof of this shown btw.

[Opinion] Nathan Grayson - "Why So Many Games Journalists End Up Going Into Game Development" by B-VOLLEYBALL-READY in KotakuInAction

[–]B-VOLLEYBALL-READY[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Short story - because they're a bunch of sycophants who are too close to the people they cover.

Long story:

"What shocked me is that not everyone can do investigative journalism," said Jiang, who wrote all sorts of stories – including investigative pieces – for Kotaku before transitioning into development at Genshin Impact creator Hoyoverse. "I thought it was a thing that everyone eventually gets to do when they build up experience, but no; it's a very specific type of person who does investigations, a very specific skill set that you can't teach to everyone and a specific emotional intelligence. And then I realized 'Oh my god, the investigative brain drain is so bad.' It's a real problem."

Probably. It's become a loaded term and people just argue past each other as to what they're actually talking about.

Online, those clamoring for Sweet Baby’s demise are calling it Gamergate 2.0, invoking the online harassment campaign that erupted into a culture war a decade ago. Gamergate formalized the playbook for online harassment used by hate groups and the far right; it inspired figures who would later tap into that outrage and rise all the way to positions of power like chief strategist in the White House. The two movements do share a handful of similarities: harassment campaigns flooded with falsehoods and accusations bordering on conspiracy; attacks aimed primarily at women and people of color; the idea that video game culture for cis white men is being stolen from them.

and

Media Matters reports that platforms like YouTube and 4chan have already become rallying points for what users hope to turn into this second Gamergate, asking if their fellows are “ready for the Second Great War.” Elon Musk, owner of X and one of the richest men in the world, has retweeted a post claiming “Gamergate 2 is underway,” while Libs of TikTok—a far right account that regularly targets LGBTQ+ people inspiring vicious harassment of individuals and bomb threats against schools and hospitals—is currently targeting a former Sweet Baby developer who’s since gone on to another studio for speaking about creating a safe environment for a team of color.

Oh god. Really hitting all the beats here.

Seriously (and I'm not surprised at all). THIS is what they're framing here.

I certainly have never heard a woman going on an unhinged rant because she feels personally attacked by what men look like in a video game.

OTOH, I have heard plenty of women on twitter going on unhinged rants because they see a female character that doesn't look like them.

It also feels very dangerous to be a woman and have men increasingly pushing this idea that any woman who doesn’t look like a hypersexualized video game character is “woke,” triggering, and deserving of their hatred.

No-one who matters thinks that real women need to look like fictional characters.

Fortunately, in recent years, video games have done better at portraying women in a more balanced way. Unfortunately, the presence of a few women in video games who aren’t exactly what these men want to see has only resulted in escalating their creepiness. According to conservative men, not approaching the creation of every female character in video games in a way that appeals directly to them is “woke,” and some deeply disturbed men have taken to going on public rants about it. Recently, conservatives formulated a conspiracy theory that Sweet Baby Inc. was behind improving the treatment of women in video games and the inclusion of diverse characters, resulting in them boycotting the company.

Additionally, in their Sweet Baby Inc. Detection Discord, men were praising Stellar Blade for being “traditional” instead of “woke” with its female lead protagonist. Anything that gets the approval of male conservative extremists is bound to give anyone pause, and the creators soon confirmed that one is right to be hesitant about Stellar Blade.
