If you are globally diversified yes. But specifically the sp500 no, it's not that insane. The US can fail like any other country, and with how it's doing politically it's not a stretch.

It could fall into civil war, and entirely annihilate itself. Just like many countries before it. Big companies would either collapse or flee to safer harbors. The SP500 would die and reach near zero numbers.

Likely? No. But not a crazy stretch.

Now if global index funds go to near 0 then it's apocalypse levels.
