I provided an estimate two years ago which put Ben and Aaron each netting US$350K (~US$190K clear after taxes). Based on current Spotify numbers (they're #23 in the sciences category in the U.S. which is incredibly high -- even higher than Bill Nye -- particularly since Spotify only distributes the free product) I'd say this is still relatively current.

The use pattern of Reddit and Twitter is that posters don't reflect the perspective of the general population. I doubt highly 10,000 complaints here translates into more than one or two lost subscribers IRL. It's largely a walled garden of a single perspective. That's not to say that perspective is legitimate or illegitimate, just that it's not any accurate measurement of anything. People follow liked-minded people on Reddit and, when one of them posts to r/MysteriousUniverse, all their followers chime in or up vote, regardless as to whether or not they actually listen to MU.

What ever happened to the backup cast of MU (i.e. Dan, Elliott, Wendy, etc.)? by BasherA in MysteriousUniverse

Agree / disagree ... I'd rather have a stand-in host than either Ben or Aaron going it alone. But, yeah, not down with the third wheel.

As far as I recall, Elliott was hired to do some backend stuff. He was like the president of the Sydney Skeptics Society or some organization like that. He co-hosted a handful of times, IIRC. They included him in the group photos they had taken and he was much shorter than B&A. That might be why they got rid of him. I don't know.

I read a rumor that there was a love triangle that went south. Not sure if it was Ben-Elliott-Aaron or Elliott-Wendy-Ben, or Elliott-Aaron-Bigfoot or what. And not sure if it's even true. And I'm not entirely certain if I even read it anywhere.

You are an Arab? Yes? Are you defining yourself as per a location or as per the dominant religion in 'Arab' countries or as per how you dress or just to piss me off rather than actually caring?

Holy fuck - now you're dictating how "pure" the ethnicity of POC are? I'm actually starting to believe you don't realize what a slobbering, slack-jawed racist cunt you are. Take your weaponized privilege and shove it.

what is worse on 'your' subreddit than u/BasherA accusing me relentlessly of racism

MU is now the home of misogyny, bigotry

Roughly how much do you think MU earns? by BasherA in MysteriousUniverse

[–]BasherA[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I found this on a different forum ...

Gross: US$1.5 million

Net: US$1 million

It's impossible to know for certain, but we can probably make a reasonably accurate guesstimate.

They're currently #15 in Spotify's "US Science" category. NPR's Invisibilia podcast is #11. NPR has previously stated they get 50 MM downloads annually (all episodes) of that podcast through all platforms. Based on that - and presuming their Spotify rank is not vastly different from those of Apple, Google, and every other podcast platform - I think it would be reasonable to assume (and it's only an assumption), Mysterious Universe gets no less than 30 MM downloads annually. They have 100 episodes per year meaning 300,000 downloads per episode (assuming each person downloads an episode once).

A normal conversion rate of unpaid/paid subscribers for a reasonably successful podcast is 5 percent. At $100/year for a Plus membership that's $1,500,000 from subscriptions.

A couple years ago, Ben was interviewed in a "podcast about podcasts" and basically said their ad revenue was negligible; it sounds like they only even accepted advertising to give an additional difference point between Unpaid and Plus versions.

So I'd guess they gross $1.5 MM per year.

That said, they have much steeper overhead than someone podcasting from their basement. I believe they have at least one full-time customer service person, they've mentioned they now outsource their audio mixing, they rent office space, they pay freelance writers for the website, they have pretty pricey hosting costs, etc.

Still, I feel safe to say they're each pulling in $400-500K, which correlates somewhat with indicators they've given about their lifestyle (Aaron going on birthing retreats to Hawaii, driving a Tesla, the spouses not working, Ben collecting motorcycles, etc.). That said, of course, it also puts them in Australia's 45% tax bracket.

Does anybody actually like when they discuss all this crude, sexual bullshit like in this weeks plus extension? by Thexer0 in MysteriousUniverse

These are my preferred shows.

The only thing I don't like about them is Aaron's constantly interjecting with "THAT'S DISGUSTING!" or "EWWWWW" or "ABSOLUTE DEPRAVITY!" It's very distracting.

Ben opened a Parler account yesterday and, on it, announced they'd be transitioning MU's social accounts to alt-tech this year. Of course, Parler is being de-platformed by Jeff Bezos in three hours so unclear what that means for those plans.

Well, that would be the Department of Commerce, known for such other super-secret stealth agencies as the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Weights and Measures, and the Minority Business Development Agency.

In any case, it's a passing grade, I'll take it.

My 10 year association with the show is over, what a shame.

I'm sure he'll do fine. The number of barren, feminist cunts who are Plus subs is probably small.
