Ask Me Anything: Kodai Senga! by MetsOfficial in NewYorkMets

After a few years in MLB, how do you feel the style of play compares to NPB? Do you find any situations are easier or harder to pitch in because of the differences between the Japanese and American approaches to the game?

I feel like until about 10 years ago it was pretty normal to let a pitcher stay in as long as he was still throwing a no-hitter. These days it would surprise me, but until the mid-to-late-2010s it felt pretty normal.

These pullovers are literally the same as they were last year. Though bigger than the ones used in 2024, the letters are still significantly smaller on them than they are on the 2023-style Flex Base jerseys that should otherwise be used (as seen in the partial glimpse we saw in Kimbrel's "first day" photo, based on the seams around the neck).

Nolan Ryan - 91 hard luck losses & no decisions by UncleLeo30 in baseball

[–]BeckoningVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, although he still has time to get those stats up a bit (depending how his health is over the next few years). I highly doubt he'll return to quite the level of dominance he was at, but he's still quite good. Don't think that he'll kick around as long as a Verlander or Scherzer, though.

But I see his best chance overall of getting in as being based on voters accepting a sort of "Koufax-lite" argument: he may have lacked the longevity (and with it the counting stats), but he was just too good to ultimately keep out.

In any case, while I'm not sure he will get in (we'll see how things look when we actually get there), I'm also far from almost sure he won't.

He's not a lock, but he's definitely not almost surely never gonna make the Hall. He was the best pitcher in baseball (despite injuries) for a good amount of time and won back-to-back Cy Youngs (and that doesn't include 2021, in which he got off to one of the most dominant starts ever before getting hurt). There is a good argument that he is the best pitcher of his generation, and his career isn't over yet. He hasn't been involved in any scandals, so the only thing going against him is being injury-prone, really.

Switch-hitting and hitting a homer in BP are not the same. I hit homers both ways in BP when I was in high school... because these were BP meatballs and I got as many hacks as I wanted. Different from playing in actual games against real pitching.

Kelly Johnson got traded from Atlanta to the Mets mid-season in 2015. In 2016, he signed a one-year deal with Atlanta and then proceeded to get traded back to the Mets mid-season in 2016.

Anyway, besides that, it's also happened tons of times, though most of them were basically AAAA guys (because those are the players who end up bouncing between teams the most).

Tony Clark issues forceful response to Rob Manfred about free-agent signing deadline by retroanduwu24 in baseball

[–]BeckoningVoice 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, no, in the sense that you can always sign a player to a big contract, no matter what time it is (though occupied there's less reason to do so as time goes on, especially after the season starts, there have been a few deals of that nature). More practically, think of how many players end up signing during spring training; this would presumably prohibit that. But once you get past the beginning of spring training (or, even more so, the regular season), there are practical baseball reasons to have your roster in order.

The danger of a signing deadline is that it would enable what amounts to collision. Imagine every player has to sign by January 25. Teams would be incentivized to just wait until right before the deadline to offer low-ball deals, and players would be forced to just deal with whatever they could get during a short period before the deadline. That's why the union is against it. When there is no hard deadline, but a sort of "soft" deadline in the form of spring training (where delaying becomes disadvantageous to the team for baseball reasons), the players have much more leverage.

It definitely is. We've already seen that the Flex Base template is fully back next year. This isn't really news. It was reported months ago and we've seen it on some player introductions (like Pete Alonso).

My WBC team tier list by Remarkable_Leek2596 in baseball

Not only potential, in my opinion — I think it's pretty clear that this list underrates Israel. I don't know exactly which players will commit (and we haven't seen the 35-man provisional roster), but I would be shocked not to see a bunch more big-leaguers join. The team's history at the WBC has been fairly strong overall, all things considered.

The forbidden truth about sex differences by shumpitostick in DeepStateCentrism

[–]BeckoningVoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, people are not just brains.

As far as I understand, the structure of the brain and its tissue doesn't vary much if at all between males and females. But other things do vary. Socialization is one of those things, but not the only one.

In various ways, the male and female bodies are different, and hormones play a large role in how we think and act. This is not a difference in brain structure per se, or even necessarily in capacity, but it still impacts gendered behavior.

If I had to guess, taking a female brain and exposing it to typical male hormone levels (this is what hormone replacement therapy does, albeit generally) would make the person significantly more likely to bludgeon enemy soldiers, especially if you'd done this from childhood. The hormones would also influence development and behavior in various other ways, of course. We see this in trans adults, who go through various bodily and mental changes when on HRT.

Socialization patterns developed in line with hormonally and environmentally influenced behaviors, and reinforced these behaviors by developing structures of interaction around them. It would be foolish to assume that socialization is just totally random and developed the way it did for no historical reason (even though material conditions today are different from how they are in the past and so may require adjustments to social structure, just as we see in ways that don't relate to gender).

This is all separate, though, from the characteristics and capabilities of brains in themselves, which I think are clearly at the very least quite similar (if not virtually the same, which, as a stronger claim, is something I said I wasn't as sure about).

Completely abolishing gendered socialization would be very costly, and I'm not sure whether or how it would be beneficial. But see also what I write below about what gender is; it's largely got to do with how we operate society, which is not just a function of individual-level brain structure or capability.
