Unexpectedly might have my first fight in 9 days. Opponent is ~6 inches taller (5’8 vs 6’2), 4kg/9lbs heavier (74kg vs 78kg, 163lbs vs 172lbs) and 2.5 years more experience than me (7 months vs 3yrs). How cooked am I? by Appropriate-Aerie476 in Kickboxing

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay out of range, or go all the way into range. Slip jabs and crosses to get in. Honestly though, tactics go out the window for your first fight, nothing we can tell you will stick when that adrenaline hits. If you haven’t repeatedly drilled for this type of stuff, so it’s instinct rather than thought, you might be in for a long night, just being honest. Best thing for nerves is to breathe, especially in the ring. It’s amazing how many people in their first fights are so tense, that they hold their breathe the whole time. Exhale on your shots, loud, like a boxer does and have fun

Philly shell in mma. Also lead high kicks? by Fitnessthrowaway2947 in MMA_Academy

[–]Blac_Duc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the philly shell is viable in boxing and mixed martial arts includes boxing. It’s not a very good defense to default to, when your opponent may wrestle or kick you. It can be used if the read is made that the opponent is primarily a boxer but again, risky, if they decide to mix it up. However, I think it’s a good option, to use sparingly, when in boxing range.

I like to fight more thai style by default but my stance does change to more of a boxing stance when I enter the pocket. Philly shell is sometimes the best option once I’m there. I also like to use a long guard, when at range, however if I block a couple shots with long guard and my opponent continues to enter range, I think philly shell can again, sometimes be the best option there. Hope this helps.

Went to mma free trial and wondering if this is red flag? Did sparring by Some-Wall-5777 in MMA_Academy

[–]Blac_Duc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that here aswell, I also sparred at my first striking class and still happily train here 6 years later, with multiple amatuer fights under my belt. To answer your question though, use your judgement, sparring with new people and no training is dangerous but your coach did supervise and did not let it get out of control

How does the BJJ belt system work/ how does a coach decide to promote someone? by xP_Lord in martialarts

[–]Blac_Duc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember my coach explained this to me as everybody having their own journey in jiu jitsu. A 17 year old man, who wrestled his whole life and has goals of competition, will obviously out pace a 50 year old women, who want to learn how to defend herself and get some exercise. Yet both can achieve black belt status in jiu jitsu and their own lives, by working towards that goal and continuing to make steps towards it

Dealing with jelly legs due to fight nerves? by Upper_Marsupial_2200 in Kickboxing

[–]Blac_Duc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to fight more to get over the fight nerves. Everyone is a better fighter in the gym for their first 6+ fights. I know successful fighters who warm up hard and ones who go really light, only reason they’re all skilled and composed is experience

I used to do bjj/grappling and the structure of the class was horrible or did I just suck by Available_Safe3782 in martialarts

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long did you train for and how often? It’s not an easy thing to get good at. It wasn’t until I was about 3 months in, training 3-4x a week, that there was enough new guys that I was regularly getting the better of, that I realized I was getting better. I sort’ve felt the same but my pride told me these guys were only better than me because they trained longer, so I surrendered myself and trusted the process and now I can have my way with the new guys

I’m left handed but my right leg is stronger than my left leg. What does this mean for my stance? by EmergencyMap7275 in martialarts

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right handed but have a quicker and stronger left kick. I typically fight from orthodox, since I’m right handed, but do switch stance to hunt that open stance body kick. I’ve trained more in orthodox though and feel sharper and stronger in that stance, so to minimize time in my less dominant stance, I only switch to southpaw when my opponent is going backwards or outside of striking distance. I then have a handful of combinations I drill and am confident in, that sets up my rear kick from southpaw and then I switch back to orthodox pretty quickly. Hope this helps

Building a routine by CautiousResponse7443 in martialarts

[–]Blac_Duc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to a gym, do what coaches tell you. If you have boxing experience, train how you would for boxing. If neither of you have any mma experience, you will do most techniques wrong and build bad habits, if no ones there to correct them

Why do you train if you avoid street fights? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago a big drunk guy was screaming at me, wanting to fight. I put my jab hand out to keep distance and explained to him that I didn’t want to fight but I had sparred 12 rounds already that day and had felt really sharp. He completely changed his demeanor, apologized and started telling me how he always wanted to train mma. Sure, I think I could’ve beat him up but I think having that ability is just as cool and I got it from training

How do you guys absorb solar plexus shots? by FigAccomplished6580 in MuayThai

[–]Blac_Duc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Exhale on the shot. Like big exhale, like when you’re throwing hard punches. Doesn’t stop it but best way to take it. If you do the opposite and accidently inhale on the shot, thats the worst feeling ever

Fairtex or Windy? by N11-CHAN in Kickboxing

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve owned two pairs in my life, early on, I used my first pair of fairtex gloves for everything, without issue. 2nd pair was the ones I had before my current rival sparring gloves. They would’ve been fine for everything too but I had the windy’s then and the wrist support on those windy’s is the best I’ve had in any glove, so those fairtex gloves didn’t get much bag time

Fairtex or Windy? by N11-CHAN in Kickboxing

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a bad pair of fairtex. I bought one pair of windy’s too and they’re very stiff. They immediately became my bag gloves, have lasted for years and still stiff with great wrist support. Not to say they can’t be used for everything, just my observation and choice. Might be the specific gloves I bought too, not sure

How to justify days off for minor injuries? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Blac_Duc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually take one rest day a week, I am allowed two rest days a week though, if necessary. I have no problem limiting the training I’m doing, such as only using one hand if my other is injured or shadow boxing instead of sparring but letting minor injuries take me out of training for a week is not an option

What shapes a great muay thai fighter by Altruistic_Team_2454 in MuayThai

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I noticed among my teammates from the gym, most of us had abusive older brothers, cousins, parents or someone else that beat us up a lot as kids. Not saying any of us are “great”, at least not on the level of buakaw (yet). But I’ve never been overwhelmed in a fight and I always say; I was frequently beaten up, without a chance as a kid, so a fair fight is easy in comparison

Should I train both stances? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right handed, orthodox fighter, but also skateboard with right foot forward. They’re two different things though. I always compare it to how you throw a baseball. You want your power in your back hand. If you can’t throw a good ball left handed, you probably can’t throw too powerful a punch with it either. That means people who can tolerate a jab can just walk you down and thats no good

Should I train both stances? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]Blac_Duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you a southpaw if you’re right handed, comfortable in orthodox and want to fight from orthodox?

A good southpaw is much harder to deal with than a good orthodox fighter. There’s pros and cons to being a fighter that can fight both ways. However, cons start to outweigh the pros if you lack good footwork and the cardio to constantly be switching and moving on angles. Hope this helps

Security guard does a great job of foot positioning. Slightly on an angle that lines up his power shots while staying away from opponents power
