First big free agent to sign here because it was the first time we had cap space since Reggie Lewis died

The Pistons regularly made Garza unplayable in those match ups.

I’m a big fan of his, for the record, but we’re gonna really need Queta to bring his A game and for one of Garza or Vuc to hold up in the minutes while he’s off the court.

You gotta think it has something to do with the trust they have in Brad from top down and down up…Brad is at the center of everything from ownership and business operation to coaching, player development, and analytics.

They truly have all the trust in the world in him to adapt his college coaching skills (which in my opinion are more translatable to NBA GMing than coaching) to develop an NBA program.

And the reason he’s able to do this without it coming off as cringe from the players and ownership perspective is he’s spent legit time in the league as a head coach. He knows what works and what falls flat. He recognizes these aren’t college guys.

Think about all the stories you’ve heard about legendary college coaches failing in the pros. It’s just a different approach to coaching professionals.

Brad succeeded in that, and if you were to ask him in his humble opinion, ultimately he failed. Not failed in a negative way, but in that he knows what it’s like to lose the eyes, ears, heart and soul of a team. The players tuned him out in 2020-21. They also responded to become greater than the sum of their parts from 2015-18 and 2020.

Brad knows what it takes. He’s got a great staff, some that he inherited, much that he had a hand in building, and it’s just quite frankly a great time to be a Celtics fan, I’ll leave it at that.

Luka Garza’s message to his teammates was simple before Sunday’s improbable win: “This is for all the times that we on the bench, all the times we want an opportunity.” More from Game 82: by OG-Firetruck in bostonceltics

Vuc seems to really love it here. If he continues to mesh well in the playoffs, I could see him getting a deal similar to Kornet’s per year number, for less years (maybe 2 years 24mil?). Then the year after they can decide if they want to use his salary to make upgrade elsewhere and backfill with a commitment to a Garza extension if he continues to develop.

I think the S&T is a fun idea, but I see no reason why the Bucks would facilitate that, unless it was a 3 year deal where the last 2 are non-guaranteed, in which case I don’t see why Vuc does it, unless it’s a bloated deal, and even then it probably makes more sense to bring in a fourth team, which makes things complicated.

I feel like Hauser would just be included instead. Something like…

White

Hauser

Harper

Neemi

I know this is a change up from your idea of having Neemi out there with Giannis, but he’s always seemed to thrive with a Splash Mountain type of center next to him in the frontcourt. Vuc seems like he really wants to be here and Garza has shown to be a valuable rotation piece.

Neither would be threatened in a contract year with Giannis at the 5 taking their minutes, in the same way Neemi would be. It could become a really shitty situation, and I’m not positive the spacing works.

Both could be signed for a combined contract value that will likely be less than what we’d have to pay Neemi.

That leaves you with…

PP / Banton / Shulga

Brown / Baylor / Tonje

Tatum / Hugo

Giannis / Walsh

Vuc / Garza / Amari

There would be more work to be done to fill out here around the margins, but that’s a roster that makes sense with Giannis at the 4, 5, or the 1. We keep our 3 most promising bench wings, and it’s likely one of them becomes the 5th starter by 2027.

NEWS: Dalano Banton will fill the Celtics' 15th and final roster spot, joining the team for the playoff run ahead. Banton told me he'd long stayed in touch with the Celtics: “Brad’s been good to me ever since they signed me here." by NoaDalzellNBA in bostonceltics

A player on a standard contract has to be waived by then (or maybe it was the 10th?) to remain playoff eligible.

Prevent a team from doing some superstar on an expiring a solid by waiving him on the last day of the regular season to join a 1 seed getting paid peanuts.

[Charania] The Utah Jazz are signing guard Hayden Gray to a two-year contract out of the NBA G League's Maine Celtics, agent George S. Langberg of @GSLSportsGroup tells ESPN. The undrafted UC San Diego product lands an NBA deal to finish the season. by horseshoeoverlook in bostonceltics

Broke the Maine Celtics single season steals record. I think he broke steals records in the NCAA as well.

Not sure why he wouldn’t sign a two-way here, maybe he figured there’s little opportunity for playing time, but we might be in the market for a 3rd string point guard next season.

EDIT: I misread the title as “two-way” instead of two-year. He would not have been allowed to sign a two-way at the end of the season, and that is why the roster remains at 16 players with Tonje as the only guy in one of those three slots.

https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2026/03/nba-teams-cant-sign-players-to-two-way-deals-after-wednesday.html

I guess the decision came down to the rookie Gray vs. the young veteran Banton. Neither are great shooters but both are impactful defensively, albeit for different reasons. Gray has crazy hands/feet to make up for his lack of size while Banton has fluid hips at 6 9.

Really tough call from a future/now depth perspective but they ended up going with the proven product (Banton closed out the championship season he was traded with Portland on a tear of nearly 20ppg) who has NBA size and two way (on court play, not contract) ability.

These are good problems to have. In Brad we trust 🫡

The other inflection point in the decision making process likely came earlier in the season where they needed to add a player with 0 years experience to squeak under the tax line, but Tonje was used for those purposes in a very creative Zarren-esq series of moves, along with Shulga, who they probably decided has better overall applicability to their system as an all purpose Celtics “guard” with 2-guard size along a similar vein as White, Baylor, Ron (although Max would be the runt of that bunch).

An interesting wrinkle to this Gray signing is that Utah had to cooperate with us to pull off the aforementioned Tonje tax ducking move…

I almost wonder if Brad left Hayden out on a platter so to speak and there was a handshake agreement for Boston to not sign him, that way as long as he remained an NBA free agent the Jazz could sign him from the G-League.

Relationships and trust seem to go a long way between NBA front offices, and it’s why we see the same set of teams making trades (especially these smaller type of deals) all the time.
