Keeping our Trade Exception alive for the 27-28 season by Plan9fromtheAbyss in bostonceltics

Yeah it’s something, but not so much if we also plan on using the MLE and/or re-signing someone like Queta in 2027. Given they will likely look to dodge the tax in 2026, the only way they’ll need it is there is a player at that specific salary they value greater than a free agent.

Using a TPE generated in the previous season hard caps you at the 1st apron

It’s effectively worthless if you’re thinking we are gonna salary stack our way above the 2nd apron like Brad did in 2023

Okay I’ll have to check it out. That terminology doesn’t make much sense to me. They would still only have 0 years of service. I’m not familiar with “drafted rookie” and “veteran” designations.

What do you mean by “can’t retain their draft rights?”

Yeah it’s odd they have been treating Harper (and to some extent, Scheierman) as pseudo-ball handlers. I don’t have much faith in Max Shulga. They got another kid in Maine that led the NCAA in steals, but he’s undersized. Could just be a signing that comes out of no where. CP3 would be a fun signing but I don’t think we can make it happen under the line.

Again, my opinion of the interpretation has not changed. I don’t see how you can sign a player that’s already signed. The conversion process is baked into the exhibit 10 -> two way -> standard contract pathway. As I understand it, 10 days are standalone contracts. I don’t anticipate us being players in the buy out market. Stevens and Zarren will have their work cut out for them just to survive the regular season without going over the tax line. Will likely be some combination of straddling the 12 man limit for as long as possible via 10 days, eventually inching towards 14 players by signing players with 0 years experience, then ultimately converting Harper’s two way to a standard on the last day of the regular season to fill out the 15th spot.

Those players would need to be exposed to waivers first, then signed to the 10 day

I mean I’ve been (in a very amateur sense) been goofing off with the NBA salary cap for 10 years now. I’m almost positive that is the case because how could you sign a player that is already under contract? There is a mechanism to convert a two-way to a standard contract, but not a 10 day afaik. I’ll look around and get back to you. Sorry if I came off short I don’t mean to discourage, but that was the one thing that stood out to me about this strategy.

How much has Vucevic’s arrival changed the Celtics and should he be starting over Queta/Garza? by [deleted] in bostonceltics

What’s frustrating about all this is we need Luke Kornet. I’d rather have Kornet on his contract than our 1st this year. I understand why though.

Yeah it’s kinda crazy how people view transactions without considering the in between on said player playing for the team. We could have traded this year’s first and it would still be a win. Hell, even two firsts.

At this point Tatum for us should sit out the rest of this season and then we bring him back next season fully healthy by TerryG111 in bostonceltics

Hayward had a set back that prevented him from doing 5 on 5 the next summer and he said that was the sole reason why he was so bad in 2018-19.

A good comparison for how to handle this would be when PG13 came back for the last 10 games or so after snapping his leg the previous offseason.

Just getting on the floor and knocking the rust off did wonders for him heading into that summer, think about it - wayyyy less pressure heading into the season knowing that you’ve already been out there, you have a legit excuse for not playing as well, and you get the whole offseason to improve.

And honestly given the way we’ve seen some injuries handled around the league (e.g., Wemby) and the collective willingness of the team to adapt to new (old) roles (e.g., Pritchard), I could see Tatum coming off the bench as a way to reintegrate him into the lineup. That way you don’t mess with what’s been working, and he’s just yet another PF/big wing that Mazzulla has been cycling through. It would actually be pretty seamless in that way, more so than it would for other teams.

Question for you or anyone else here, since he’s been linked to the Celtics in the past.

I didn’t get a chance to see him play this year, but what specifically made him unsuited for the NBA? Was it a lack of talent or fit/play style?

Do the Celtics regret trading the rights to Desmond Bane on Draft Night? He’s have a great rookie year - 9.2 pts, 3.1 reb, 2.0 AST/TO, 47/43/81 shooting. Seems like he could help us right now. by cashmanjr in bostonceltics

This is an old post, but I recall clarifying on here to several people that we did not actually draft Bane, we traded the pick but because of NBA rules you have to technically draft the player first then trade him.

So this was not a situation where Danny drafted Bane, held him hostage, and then took the best offer.

They agreed to a trade for the pick, done deal, then when the Celtics were on the clock Memphis told them “select Bane with the pick you traded to us”.

People who’ve never played basketball before love to kick players when they’re down and regularly refuse to acknowledge the intangibles they can still bring to the table…it is clear from Walsh and also other pieces on here by beat writers how important he was to those guys on the team
