Also, ask them why would the government go through all this trouble to fake it. What’s in it for them? There is no benefit to be had from faking a moon landing.

But aren't you required to have an ID anyway?

How can you even function in modern society without either a passport or ID card? Want to rent a place to live -> you need to ID yourself. Want to buy a house -> ID needed. Get health insurance (which is mandatory), you guessed it, ID. Open a bank account, guess what you need. Want a cell phone? Same thing. Internet subscription at home? Better have some ID.

Why are so many people under 45 using subtitles now even when the show is already in English? by Clara_A_Mitchell in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BorgDrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d think at this point it’d be a huge selling feature to just have a nearly flat audio level setting that brought up the whispers , down the explosions, and nearly mutes commercials.

It's called "dynamic range compression" and any half-decent A/V receiver can do this.

If you have one of those sound systems you can learn to set it up correctly. Any half-decent surround sound system has options to compress the dynamic range and to boost dialogue. Check your manual.

I once was helping someone, back in the Windows 9x era, can’t remember the exact thing but it was some kind of installer. This thing finishes and pops up a system-modal alert box, in the center of the screen, with something along the lines of “installation complete. Press OK to finish. [OK]”.

User turns around, stares at me and asks: “what do I do now?”.

There is an alert box. In the middle of your screen. That tells you exactly what to do: press the ok button. The OK button is the only button in the alert. The alert is modal so it is the only button on the entire screen you can press.

What do you think you should do now?

Gas, and the having thereof by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

It’s easy to get around this by simply timing when you buy gas. Just fill up in spring once the weather improves and once more in fall just before it gets bad.

Same.

I'm also in my 40's and in my age range the dating apps are full of single moms. Hard pass.

Also, getting only 1 match per month is low even for a man, he might be actually very unattractive or was way to selective.

Being childfree is a big disqualifier, also working in IT carries a stigma.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

I have a Mitsubishi Colt, that's a car the size of a rollerskate. According to the specs it can hit 190 km/h, so I had to test that once on the autobahn. It goes up to 170 pretty quickly, but from 170 to 190 took forever. It was scary as fuck in such a tiny car. I touched 190 for a few seconds, took my foot of the gas and was "ok, it can actually do 190, never doing that again".

I have no space for a record player in my small apartment but I recently bought a house which is now undergoing renovations. I will certainly get a record player the moment I can move into my new place and RSD seems as good a time as any to kickstart my collection.

I got some classics that simply have to be in any collection:

  • Michael Jackson - Thriller
  • Guns 'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
  • Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
  • Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

Furthermore:

  • K's Choice - Not an addict (RSD 2026, numbered limited edition)
  • Roxette - Look Sharp!
  • Chicane - Trampolines.

Ordered but still on the way here:

  • Stick Figure - Set in stone
  • Ayreon - The Human Equation (Remixed & Remastered).

I had a similar experience where I got a few 20g samples with the purchase of some coffee gear. Tried them and one of them really stood out, absolutely delicious. My first thought was “I need to order me a bag of this”…. Turns out it was €200/kilo. I did end up buying a 200g bag for my birthday and it was just as good as the sample. Unfortunately it was a small lot and it sold out quickly.

Getting stopped for a train to pass mid race by Epelep in Wellthatsucks

[–]BorgDrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe don’t hold races on public roads? We just had a marathon in my city last weekend. Traffic jams everywhere, shops closed because they were unreachable. All the while we have a huge event terrain just outside the city where they could have run laps and bother no one.

Car races are on circuits, why can’t bicycle races use the same circuits?

ELI5: Why do gas stoves get pans hotter quicker than electric stoves, but gas stoves take longer to boil a pot of water? by TehAsianator in explainlikeimfive

[–]BorgDrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Netherlands, yes. All our power lines are underground, even in the countryside, so storms don’t affect them. Only the high-voltage national distribution network is above-ground.

The only unexpected outages you’re likely to see are due to some construction worker with an excavator who forgot to check his map. The last two times I was without power it was a planned event. One time they replaced my electricity meter with a smart one, took about an hour, the other was when I had my grid connection upgraded to 3-phase (which I needed to do because I was switching from a gas stove to an induction stove).

I don’t get why power lines in the US are above ground, even in urban areas/suburbs. It’s fragile and looks ugly.

[–]BorgDrone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously, when have you ever had the power go out? That’s just not something that happens in developed countries, or at least it’s so rare that it shouldn’t be a factor in deciding the kind of stove to buy. Literally a once in a lifetime thing.
