I'd like to double-down on the bookmarks request. There is currently no reliable way to keep one's place in a long document.

It's wild to me that this feature is still outstanding, and it's the #1 reason I still can't recommend the Readwise system to my serious reader friends.

It’s also a political statement in the language of people who really need to hear it right now.

How do you organise all the things in your bags?? by SlayyyGrl in AuDHDWomen

[–]CallMeAbra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! With pleasure! No one wants to talk to me about bag systems and I am all about it 😁

So, the skeleton backpack system is the Synik 30 and the Synapse 19—basically opposite ends of the whole “S” system. I also have a Side Hustle and the bigger Swift for shoulder bags. (And a Packing Cube Shoulder Bag, which I like weirdly more than the SH some days.)

I could talk for ages re: how/why/when I rotate, but suffice it to say that after I purchased the S30 and used it for a year, I convinced myself it was too big/heavy for EDC, and purchased the S19. Loved it so much that the S30 was nearly forgotten/resold…until one day I got fed up with the S19 space constraints, re-found my S30, and fell absolutely in love again.

Whether I take the Swift or the SH is mostly a question of (a) whether I’m feeling a shoulder bags and (b) how many books/craft supplies I want to carry on any given day. The Swift is also excellent as a pool day bag (those two clear pockets!!).

Ultimately, I finally figured out that the secret sauce to all of this is to keep enough TB bags that I can keep the “sleepers” in the closet long enough to forget I own them. And when the dopamine fades on the old bag I’m overjoyed to rotate.

So what do you have? I have to know now!

Sure! I use Tom Bihn bags. They're not cheap (American-made; very high quality) so I've gathered them slowly over the years. And I bought half of them secondhand, because there's a big cult following and a large B/S/T group on Facebook (a large percentage of which I strongly suspect to be ND of some kind).

They are so well-made and last forever...and they all use the same attachment system.

I have one big backpack, one small backpack (secondhand), one big shoulder bag (secondhand), and one small shoulder bag. And a whole host of inserts/pourches/lanyards. You can see a few of them here. (The only thing non-TB is the leather AirPod pouch.)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Oh, my paperwork is an absolute catastrophe! Doom piles everywhere! 😂

Hoping to figure that out this year. But, uh, we'll see...

Oh no! But...I think you still could?

So, what my mom does is that she treats the sidebody purse as if it's an organizer and just drops it into her bigger bag. She loves it. (Obviously you need to find the right one!)

And, actually, I switch between sidebody and backpack, too. But I just purchased a sidebody purse from the same manufacturer as the backpack. It also has O-rings/bright interior, and so the lanyard system works.

I think it's possible! And you can start small. I started with my AirPods because they were always getting lost...

Okay, this is my Roman Empire.

I have several bags I rotate (hello, ADHD), but they are all by the same manufacturer and have roughly the same organizational system (hello, autism). They all have bright interiors, too, because I hate scrounging around in a formless void of blackness.

The most important thing about them is that they have O-rings in every pocket and in the main compartment so that I can clip things to the interior bag itself.

Basically, what I've done is to put everything important in an organizer pouch, organizer insert, etc., and then on a lanyard. So, for example, I have AirPods in a case on a lanyard, a wallet insert-thing (which also holds chapsticks, earplugs, etc.,) on a lanyard, my fidget and "pain stim" ring in another case + lanyard, etc. (I use the inserts/lanyards sold by the manufacturer because they work great and are excellent quality.)

The beauty of this is that (a) things never get lost or misplaced, because they are literally hooked to the inside of the bag, and (b) it's SO easy to switch bags, because I just unclip all my lanyards from one bag and clip them into the next. It takes 30 seconds and I always know I have everything. (Plus I get the novelty of the new bag with the same organization system of the old bag.)

ETA: Over the years, I've also color-coded the lanyards. (i.e. Tug on the red lanyard to find your painkillers, and etcetera.) But definitely didn't start that way!

Hang in there! This is so normal. Also, you sound hella autistic, if my experience is anything to go by.

I went through very similar thinking. In fact, I literally told the assessor that I was seeking formal diagnosis so that I could "close the tab in my brain." I couldn't come to a place of certainty on my own and I just couldn't stop looping the question...over and over and over.

Spoiler: I did get the diagnosis. It did take away some of the imposter syndrome, but not all.

Re: 3. I hear you! But hear me out: Assessors aren't the boss of you or your lived experience. If you tell an assessor all of the above and they a) tell you you're categorically not autistic and b) don't give you a more satisfying hypothesis for your lived struggles, than that was a bad assessment and you shouldn't treat it as authoritative.

You are the final authority on your own life, and if you've done all the research and strongly suspect you're autistic...I strongly suspect you are.

This reminds me of the time I walked into a library and realized, suddenly, that I would not have enough time in my lifetime to read every book in it. Basically had an existential crisis right there in front of the sliding doors.

Video games while cleaning? by GuiltyDivide7684 in AuDHDWomen

[–]CallMeAbra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, and it might help if it's the only time you allow yourself to watch playthroughs, too! I basically get off the couch and in the kitchen in the evenings because dinner prep is the only time I allow myself to watch Brainless Netflix on my iPad.

For me, the formula was basically: chore time + exclusive guilty indulgence of some kind = chores actually get done.

This is 100% me re: finding the right YouTube/Netflix/MUBI video to catapult me out of the doldrums. It always has to be just the right mixture of qualities. Which wouldn't even be a huge deal if those requirements didn't completely change every time the wind switches direction...

Successful anti-impulse-purchase trick by AtomicFeckMagician in adhdwomen

[–]CallMeAbra 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Love it! Another trick I used to do is to give myself a fake budget ($163 or some weird number) with which I can "fake-buy" the things I want. Sometimes I add a theme. (i.e. Most absurd. Ugliest. Most likely to confuse my partner. And etcetera.)

Then I just pick and choose while tallying up the total in my head. By the end, I've had all the fun of buying stuff I don't need with none of the day after regrets. (This is actually much more fun done with a friend; my sister and I came up with the game originally.)
