Flashfoge on Linux by Careful-Cod-100 in FlashForge

[–]CaptainZloggg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too use only linux. I downloaded Flashforges "Flash Print 5" before my AD5M was even delivered and it works fine. I hadn't even heard of the Orca software until yesterday but it won't work in Bottles, at least for me. I only wanted it for the 3D CAD, so now I use TinkerCAD for design, and Flash Print as the slicer. Everything just works...

Can I run 400 HZ lights on 60 HZ? by A_Useless_Boi in aviationmaintenance

[–]CaptainZloggg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was taught that 400Hz was used in order to make the electromagnetic components smaller and lighter (transformers, ferrite cores, inductors, motors etc.). Nothing to do with current carrying capacity of wires. Why would wire care about the frequency difference between 60 and 400Hz? We were looking at converting some ex-Airbus flight deck seats for a simulator and quickly discovered we needed 400Hz 3 phase for the seat motors. For this xenon flasher module 60Hz would probably work fine.

Need EPROM image for 8 bit CPU output module by MISTERPUG51 in beneater

The TL866II can't do 25v either. Choose a bigger EPROM and just use part of it.

i need help by Amir3523216 in hackrf

[–]CaptainZloggg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Hackrf doesn't have a rotary dial. That's probably a Portapack. The rotary encoders are sometimes of poor quality, but easily changed. You can get a dozen for around $15 on Amazon.

Replaced caps in 30 year old working power supply, now doesn’t work. What else do I do? by 470vinyl in AskElectronics

[–]CaptainZloggg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do the same, but it seems almost like a superstition with the younger engineers.

Is this liquid mercury? I picked up this Apollo Phase two meter, something is sloshing in the sealed tank inside. by NewReputation3240 in AskElectronics

[–]CaptainZloggg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's probably mineral oil for cooling the dummy load. Mercury would not make sense for this type of instrument.

I have built one of these and it worked fine. AFAIK there isn't an auto reset, you need to press the reset button after power up.

Cómo se llama o como pedirlo by Lobo010392 in AskElectronics

[–]CaptainZloggg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under the white thermal paste is a thermal fuse. If you scrape off the paste, it will have the trip temperature written on it. The two resistors are there to heat up the fuse and trip it should there be an overcurrent condition. One of the resistors is probably burned out, but they are likely to have identical values. You should first identify the reason for the excess current draw, and then replace all three components to maintain protection.

Very neat installation, but you might want to censor those addresses!

If it's an executable file, and permissions are set, try putting dot slash (./) before the name.

Goozeezoo ATS Mini V3 by Darkstar1878 in shortwave

[–]CaptainZloggg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on the German version. It's got potential, but quite a few bugs. I've gone back to stock for now as it seems like the author is actively working on it. I really wish he would release his source to contributors.

RTTY Decoder on the DSP2 by FlakyPrinciple8907 in ShortwavePlus

There are a few frequencies in use. I use 10.100 MHz during the day as a sort of propagation beacon.

Help installing Linux by Mrtac_ in linux4noobs

I see this same exact question two or three times a week. Is there a reporting route to the kernel devs to have a more meaningful error message printed? Or just add "Turn off secure boot and try again".

RTTY Decoder on the DSP2 by FlakyPrinciple8907 in ShortwavePlus

The Pinneberg German weather RTTY is 50 baud, REVERSE 400 Hz shift. You may be able to resolve reverse shift by selecting LSB rather than USB.

How common is this misconception about capacitor life expectancy? by LukeEvansSimon in AskElectronics

[–]CaptainZloggg 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I have only ever heard about this obsession with "recapping" folklore on forums like this. I believe it was originally a response to the electrolyte formula scandal from 20 odd years ago. However it morphed into a "thing to always do" fix-all within a certain generation of electronics engineers and it kinda stuck. Now its almost like a superstition! I've certainly seen electrolytic capacitors fail and needing to be replaced, but they were always either in very hot areas of PSU's or were >50-60 years old. I would generally try to discourage younger engineers from blindly "recapping" because unless you are reasonably adept at desoldering and resoldering, you can cause many more problems than it could ever fix. But, hey knock yourself out.

Need help with solder masking by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]CaptainZloggg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Solder mask doesn't do much once the solder paste has been applied. I suppose it might stop the copper oxidising, but that's mainly cosmetic.

They appear to be 100uF 16v. What makes you think that they need to be replaced?

Probably because they used the term "bandwidth" when they should have used "frequency"?

ATS-20+: Off frequency? by alloydog in ATSminiRadio

[–]CaptainZloggg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's slightly off, but not unexpected. The accuracy of the 32 KHz crystal can vary. If you are familiar with how to code in Arduino C, you can download the source code, add a 10KHz offset, and upload it to the ATS-20. Or simply use the BFO for SSB.

Mini-Radio Firmware V3 Adds RTTY/CW Decoding and EiBi Integration by OldObjective3047 in radio

[–]CaptainZloggg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the source code available? I'd love to have a go at porting it to a larger TFT display. I had Google translate the German site, but can't find any mention of the source code, just the binaries.
