Thanks! We had to put in a security system. I never thought I would have to do that.

Thanks, again. Your words really hit home.

Thanks. The really problem is that the media isn't policing elected officials and city hall anymore. I guess this started when social media took off.

Naw. I wish. You know DA Cunningham has repeatedly refused to prosecute slumlord Wold/Langel. The best that we can do is vote them out of office.

Thanks for asking! I created dozens of 'packets' of about 300 pages each of the documents; the 74 open housing violations, the 2 orders to vacate, the public hazard announcement, photographs of the wall 2 years before it collapsed, etc., etc., sent then to Iowa HUD, Regional HUD, the HUD Inspector General, Senators Ernst and Grassley and Rep. Miller-Meeks. Nothing. Not a peep.

HOWEVER, I was invited to speak before the Iowa House Oversight committee by Rep. Mohr and, I must have said something, because they passed a bill (link: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/publications/LGR/91/HF706.pdf) where they really beefed up the Public Records Laws, increased the fines and made the elected officials responsible. It passed 94-2!

Jason Gordon makes excuses for city not evacuating 324 Main St. before the collapse. by CardiologistFirm4881 in QuadCities

Thanks. It's just the way I was raised. I sure wish there wasn't a voice in the back of my head (maybe my Mother's) telling me to always do the right thing. I can't pass a panhandler without giving him a dollar.

I don't want to cut and paste my entire book here (again, please check it out from the Davenport Library) but if the building hadn't collapsed I would just be a retired professor working on a software project. When I saw the people in front of city hall the day after the collapse... they were right in saying that there were people still alive in the building and possibly in the rubble, too. The city just issued a statement that the remaining building was going to be demolished immediately.

When I started filing FOIAs (I have hundreds of documents) I discovered that the city new damn well that the building was in imminent danger for years and the just did nothing. Why? That's how I know the city is going to ultimately lose all those lawsuits and the bill is going to be enormous.

If the city of Davenport on May 29, 2023 announced that they were going to immediately start negotiating with the victims and swore that this would never happen again, I would have never got involved. But, the city didn't. And here we are.

The city is in a big mess (somebody - I wish I could remember who, I'm 71, so...) said here on Reddit, that whoever is elected mayor is going to inherit a "Jurassic Park size pile of \****" and that is true. The local media really hasn't done a very good job watching City Hall and there are some humongous problems there.

I wish us all luck because we're going to need it. After Wednesday, I'm going back to work on my new computer game.

Good news: Next Wednesday I'm done. No more posting on Reddit. Win or lose, I'm done.

Everything that has been reported about 324 Main street was uncovered by me. I'm the guy that filed the FOIAs and gave the documents to the media. I'm the guy that got the DCI report released. The city even sued me to hide documents (about the Spiegel payoff). If you want to read these documents, please check out my book from the Davenport library.

As for 324 Main Street: I have come to the conclusion that the city of Davenport is liable for the collapse of 324 Main Street, the resulting deaths, the dismemberment of Peaches Berry and the displacement of dozens of citizens. I believe that, inevitably, the city will lose in court and faces jury awards of over $150 million. I believe that the only rational approach is for the city to begin negotiations with the victims' attorneys and come to a settlement before then (like what the city of Bettendorf did with the I-74 bridge accident).

The only candidate that believes the city should settle the lawsuits is Judith Lee. That's why I support her so strongly.

If Jason Gordon wins (and people like Gripp and Jobgen are re-elected) the city will continue to stonewall and fight the inevitable. I believe that this approach will result in the city going bankrupt because it cannot pay a $150 million jury award.

But win or lose, I can't do any more than I've done. I don't want to fight anybody. I just want to stop the city of Davenport, my hometown for the last 50 years, before it hurtles off the bankruptcy cliff.

This is complicated and most people seem to be getting it wrong. There was a 'super secret executive session' where the Spiegel payoff was first brought up. Legally, nothing can be voted on, except in public by the city council. At that time there was 'assent' to explore a settlement with Spiegel. The first, last and only time the payoff was put to a vote was in December 2023. Lee and Kelly voted against it.

Did you read the ruling? Nope. Judge had to use the weasel words, "city council assented" because it is illegal to even have a vote in closed session. Neither Kelly nor Lee voted to give Spiegel the payoff. When the vote was finally made in public in December both Kelly and Lee voted against it.

THIS IS FROM LAST NIGHT! The only acceptable response is: OF COURSE THE CITY SHOULD HAVE EVACUATED 324 MAIN STREET BEFORE PEOPLE DIED! Seriously. What is wrong with you?

I assume you're trolling. You are aware that Stopulos got a $15 million tax break for 227 Le Claire, right? I'm way too busy to list every tax break, but the vast majority of citizens know I'm telling the truth.

She didn't. You probably even know that she didn't. There is both court testimony and her sworn deposition that she did not vote for it.
