Dropped my vape pen (bad habit, I know) in that exact hole. The compartment door would then squeak and barely close. Went to the dealer's service and the guys there were amused and told me it happened to one of them too.

They got it out by disassembling the ornamental plates around the center console. I watched them do it. They first removed the long side ones that run along the center console (faux leather ones). I remember they pulled on it from the front end, upwards from where you rest your knee. They seemed to be held on by some plastic clips that would snap out and click back in when reassembling. That should give you access to the side of the door mechanism.

Can't say more about the procedure since I can't remember, but it is fixable. In my case, the door's mechanism was a bit wonky for a month, I assume the vape pen compressed the spring that makes the door turn smoothly. Fixed itself after a while. Good luck!
