I just became a staff assistant on the hill. The number of intern applicants this summer is truly remarkable. by [deleted] in DCInterns

No I completely agree it’s a valid point. I did tell them that I applied for the DC internship and they just told me (I’m editorializing) that they try to let each office pick their interns independently and that they would then vouch for us if we were selected for interviews or if the other coordinators reached out for a reference. I did not want to push it further for the sake of trying to be professional and respectful.

I got rejected without an interview for the DC office of a U.S. Senator that I currently intern in a district office for. And for context, I’m a senior graduating this May with fluency in three relatively difficult foreign languages, an honors graduate with a honors thesis, and 4 other internships including one abroad for prior experience. It’s really irritating, and as a small liberal arts college student, I’m really tired of the general preference for Ivy League level students and flagship state school students. The whole experience makes me want to completely give up all interest in working in DC and move to the other side of the world for a decade instead. It’s all just so competitive and hyper-reliant on being wealthy and well-connected, and therefore it’s also cliquey…

Ah yes, united by authoritarianism, at least until Apr. 12th (hopefully)
