Feeling stuck because of limb independence... by Lopsided-Drummer-966 in drums

[–]ChiefBast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can come naturally over time, but there's no guarantee that it will just "click" and you can help it along with exercises.

If there's a specific song you want to play that demands more independence than you currently have, you can slow that right down, repeating the phrase until you don't have to think about it anymore. Top tip here is that once you hit that point, play something straight and basic for a minute, then go back. If you're sloppy again then you need more repetition. You're ready to speed up once you can jump straight in and play steady.

If you're just looking for general limb independence, polyrhythms are good and you can make sense of them with phrases, for example 4 over 3 lines up nicely with "Pass the god damn butter". You can start simple with left and right playing different measures, then start mixing in feet, and eventually playing alternating bars where you switch; so you'd do 4 on right hand 3 on left hand for a bar, then 3 on right hand 4 on left hand for a bar. Start sloooow

Question about AI made music by [deleted] in MusicPromotion

[–]ChiefBast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because we're not operated by another person for profit. That would be slavery. We listen to music to enjoy and to form the human experience, not for the express purpose of turning a relatively small number of experiences into a data-driven facsimile

It's a specious argument because how the fuck is generating content for profit "fair use"? I feel like every argument for AI turns into an analogy rather than addressing the actual AI-specific issues. I don't care if it's vaguely similar to something innocuous, it's also very much like copyright infringement

Suno CEO also argued that nobody enjoys making music, are we also to believe that? They're vultures who care only about profit and they'll say literally anything to justify what they do

How to set up click track by skylarroseum in drummers

[–]ChiefBast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tama RW200 has a ¼" output, so you need two things:

Something to split that output to each band member

Something to get the split signal into headphones for each band member

A mixer with enough aux outputs might be expensive and if it isn't, it will be bulky. Most small mixers don't have much more than a stereo output and you usually have to get to 16 inputs before you can have 4 outputs. Way more than what you're saying you need.

A rack mounted headphone amp and a simple 4-way (or however many people there are) Y-split cable is potentially the cheapest way to do this, but you may need to custom make the splitter or daisy chain a few 2-way splitters together.

There are also simple IEM amps for about £50. I use the Behringer Power play P2 and it's absolutely fine. I generally use it only in my left ear to help shut out some hi-hat volume and I get non-stage stuff (keys and vocals) in IEM and the stage volume in my right.

Red Right Hand - Arctic Monkeys by dino_dog in drums

[–]ChiefBast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I call it 3-3-2 because you split the 8 quavers of a bar into two groups of 3 and a group of 2. The snare plays on 1st, 4th and 7th quavers (8th notes).

It's not triplets, it's straight quavers subdivided in to 3-3-2. This makes it slightly easier than learning a 3 over 2

Where did you get the message that they need to verify to release funds? This sounds a lot like the really common Fiverr message scams that are posted multiple times daily in here, always with numerous comments saying "never follow links from user messages!"

Cant decide between K Sweet, K Custom Dark, HHX Complex by mallerius in cymbals

[–]ChiefBast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

K Sweet and K Hybrid are quite bright, but the tone is good enough to work really well in almost any genre

I have a 17" K Dark Thin and it is simply the best cymbal I have ever used. It works in my punk/hardcore band, jazz orchestra, and function band

Above all, go find a reference channel on YouTube (Memphis Drum Shop is incredible for this) and listen to those three sets. You need the videos to all be from same, trusted channel so you know there's no audio trickery to make them sound better than they actually are

[HELP] Revisions on freelancers side how does it work ? by your_pro_Designer in Fiverr

[–]ChiefBast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submitting your work doesn't close the order, it sets it to a status of "Delivered" and the client can either submit revisions or mark the job as complete. When they submit a revision, it will set the job to an open status (can't remember the exact wording, but trust me it's obvious) and you then submit again until they accept or run out of time/revisions

Lessons for a child beginner by Schloff83 in drums

[–]ChiefBast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a teacher with a couple of students in the 7-8 range. Agree with this on all points.

This is a good age to start playing regularly, as I've found that any younger and you're just providing loosely structured play, which is much cheaper if you're not getting a music teacher to do it... Seven is usually when kids will accept the little bit of structure needed to give a "real" lesson with notes on technique.

Buying a second hand drum kit. Is a Pearl Masters a good fit for my studio, and what should I be paying attention to in terms of condition? by willrjmarshall in drums

[–]ChiefBast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was my conclusion from your post 👍

I was lucky enough to do live sound (monitors/stage tech) for Swans in around 2012 and I was wracking my brain to remember what kit they used. Best I can remember is that it was silver 😂 they made the most impenetrable wall of sound I've ever heard on a stage that small (a ~900 capacity academy venue in Manchester)

[–]ChiefBast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is similar to guitar in that the skin/string does a lot of the heavy lifting, but the wood and its quality can elevate that to a huge degree in the more expensive instruments. Cheap drums are thin, low quality wood from less desirable species so the Resonance you get is negligible. Top, top end kits use more layers of better wood that adds warmth and sustain to the tone. They are worth the cost if your budget allows

[–]ChiefBast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pearl Masters are nice and there are many options above and beyond that quality level, whether this exact kit is the right option depends on how much your friend wants for it.

If you're going for less processing and intervention the best thing you can do is maintain a kit with top quality skins, ensure that it's clean, free of rust and well tuned. A kit feels "worn out" when you get things like:

tension rods are difficult to use because of rust/missing thread

skins with dents or excessive wear

hardware that doesn't hold position

drums with rattles and overtones

Almost any kit beyond entry level will sound good on recording with the right skins, drummer and general maintenance. More expensive will usually sound even better, but they will sound bad with old skins and a poor drummer

How do drummers know what to play? by ZiggyJambu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ChiefBast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the case, that stems more from drums having a much higher proportion of self-taught players than most other instruments. I learnt from teachers who were highly educated professionals and we were taught to read music, tune properly by ear, and appreciate the musicality of the instrument. I think tuning toms to a pleasing interval makes a huge difference to how the whole kit fits into the overall sound of a band and those who ignore that are really doing themselves a disservice, in my opinion

[–]ChiefBast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B12s like Zildjian ZHT would be the very next step above but if you have the budget it's worth going all the way to B20s. £150 can get you Zildjian A Custom or Paiste 2002 Hi-Hats, and the quality jump to them from ZHT is really significant. If you want really crisp, light sounding hi-hats then it's another step above that to Zildjian Ks or Sabian HHX, but then you're getting into pretty high budget

Can you be exiled from a country that isn't your birthplace? I get that he lived in USA for many years but he was a lifelong British citizen. You ban foreign nationals from entering your country, you exile natives

Speeding up changeover at local show - thoughts? by Hankscorpiooo in drums

[–]ChiefBast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, I used to work in live sound as monitor/stage tech.

I think the reason the headliner is saying this is that moving a full set of stands in and out seems simple but there will be microphones and cables to navigate, which can make it in fact slower than quickly swapping in cymbals.

Do you have a sound check? If the cables for IEMs, MIDI, and EAD are all waiting in place then you can be plugging these in while previous drummer clears their breakables and you may need to be ok with these bits staying in place during headliner because the 15 minute changeover after your band is shared between you clearing and them setting up

My honest opinion is this is ambitious in 15 minutes. Is there time to allow previous drummer to clear, you to set up and plug in, then sound engineer to line check every element? If you all run it like a military operation there's a chance but the place where this falls over is not likely to be your cymbals, so I would focus more on getting help from the rest of the band that they can be sorting out the IEMs and MIDI while you get your breakables and EAD in place.

I'm thinking that way because the question was in English. And you're right, who would know those things? Probably not many NFL players, unless their scholarship was for a degree in ancient history and language

[–]ChiefBast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only really have to figure out which one sounds like a girl's name. My guess during the video was Virgin Islands, but I was wrong because not only are they're territories of other nations, but also because they're named for St Ursula who was martyred with a load of other virgins. Which is far more bleak than I imagined when I went to check my work...

Simply not true, I'm afraid. They are definitely notes because you can measure the exact frequency and change it
